School systems control how students spend their day and what classes they take. It is unnecessary to control how students dress as well. School uniforms should not be mandatory for high schools in Ontario. Uniforms limits creativity and freedom, are expensive, and can create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Uniforms limit creativity and freedom. Firstly, how will people with religious attire wear their uniform? Uniforms make it difficult for anyone with specific religious beliefs to dress according to what they were taught and believe. Also, school uniforms remove any chance for students to show off their individuality. Students are told to wear exactly what the school says down to the colour of their socks, even their hair has to follow specific rules. Furthermore, everyday of a student’s high school career they are forced to wear the exact same thing. It gives the student no chance of showing off who they are or to learn how to dress appropriately for future events. Uniforms limit creativity and freedom which is why they should not be mandatory. Uniforms are expensive. First off, some families don’t have the funds to pay for uniforms. Most families have either a lack of income to afford uniforms or they have more than one child in their family which means they then have to pay for multiple uniforms. Also, students are constantly growing, meaning they need new uniforms. Parents are forced to buy new uniforms almost every year because uniforms become too short or too small for the students to wear and it still be appropriate. Lastly, most uniforms have to be ordered online which means shipping taxes. Not only do parents have to buy the uniform they then have to pay extra money to actually get it to them.
