Motivational Methods HCS/325 October 10, 2011 Jamee Smith Motivational Methods There are many different motivational methods used in the workplace. One key player is inspiration, which is unavoidable in the workplace. For a future manager it’s important for them to know different ways of inspiring employees so that work is done more efficiently. Through this paper the different methods will be discussed and show the significance of inspiration. The inspirations of workers can a large problem for managers in business.
L.L. Bean Relies on Its Core Values and Effective Leadership 1. What style of leadership do you think most L.L. Bean managers probably employ? I believe that managers’ effectiveness often depends on their styles of leadership, that is, their ability to influence others, either formally or informally.
This is communicated down to the employees to set the standard for what is expected. Together, these functions can set the success level of a company. Culture and Behavior An organization is consciously coordinated social unit, composed of two or more people that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common goal or set of goals (Robbins & Judge, 2009, p. 6). Organizations can have several different purposes. Some are for profit and are in business to make money while others are non-profit and their primary focus is to meet a need.
He presented current issues that the firm was facing, and his opinion that the firm was not operating at their full capacity. Recognizing these factors throughout the case allowed our group to understand the change agent is not subject to be someone with prior experience, but also involves, and is crucial for the individual to have ambition, drive, organizational skills, and ability to measure the company and strive to develop his or her skills further to benefit/fit the needs of the company. This case was a great reminder to our group that creating change becomes real when you believe on a personal level that it is possible. Reflecting back to previous cases, a major factor that made creating change challenging was when individuals were not inspired to evaluate situations and determine alternatives to the way they are working. We understand that this does not necessarily mean that the way an organization is working should always think of ways they can change, but more or less be prepared for situations when it should be happening.
Subject: Briefing note on supporting good practise in Performance and Reward Management ‘The conventional definition of management is getting work done through people, but real management is developing people through work.’ Agha Hasan Abedi Explain at least 2 purposes of performance management and its relationship to business objectives. Often viewed in a negative light (to be performance managed often means to be closely managed due to poor performance) performance management is actually a vital, positive tool that can help an organisation deliver success by improving performance through developing the capabilities of its individuals and teams. One of the key purposes of performance management is personal development of employees. By comparing their performance against strategic organisational goals and objectives, an organisation has a consistent way of measuring an individual’s performance or that of an entire department or team. The insight gained could be specific to the individual or could highlight an operational shortfall.
Affecting Change Paper Jenea M. Smith LDR 531 March 21, 2011 John Thompson Affecting Change Paper Leadership can be defined as the ability to encourage and persuade others to work towards achieving a goal. Leaders are individuals who are concerned with doing the right thing, and managers are individuals who are concerned with doing things right. Leaders of companies and organizations are often faced with challenges of motivating employees to adjust to cultural changes and organizational structural. In large companies or organizations, the efficiency of managers depends on the influence they have over their subordinates, as well as their peers and superiors. Communication is an integral part of a successful workplace, a successful personal life and successful collaboration. Not everyone communicates the same way though. For communication to work, the sender must share information to the receiver, and the receiver must get the message and correctly interpret it. The process is considered the communication loop, and it’s only considered successful when the sender is able to confirm that the receiver properly understood the message (Reyes, 2014). One of the main obstacles to a successful communication loop is communication style differences.
HCS 475 Leadership Style Paper Leadership is something not everyone can do in their lives, and for one it should be defined as a process by which a person can influences others around them to accomplish an objective as well as to direct the organization in a way that can make it grow and be a successful organization. The role of leadership within any organization would be determined by the culture the organization as set in place from the beginning and established it to the employees. A good leader sees the best in people and figures out what it takes to motivates the individuals. Leadership style is a form of manner and approach in which an individual can provide direction, implementing plans, motivating, and influencing people. These
“Thinking about Leadership” by Thomas Cronin According to Thomas Cronin, there is a big difference between being a manager and a leader, “managers do things the right way, while leaders are more concerned with doing the right thing” (27). Throughout his article he provides numerous characteristics to define a leader along with many examples of past time leaders also examples of how a true leader would handle certain situations. A leader knows who they are; they select and solve priority problems, have a sense of humor, are skilled mediators, show signs of integrity and possess brains and breadth. Becoming or being a continuous leader is not an easy task, it really takes a special type of person. In summation, Thomas Cronin wanted the reader to understand that anyone can be a leader; leadership is not restricted to just the government.
I think the reason this equation Performance = Motivation x Ability is used mostly in management is because these are factors that can be manipulated by leaders. They can hire the people with the right abilities for the specific job they need and also improve ability with training. There are also several ways, which we have learned in this chapter, that managers can apply to motivate their employees. Some argue, which I agree with, that you can create your own opportunities. This is somewhat true as well.
