“The Land has Eyes: Pear ta ma'onmaf” “The Land has Eyes” is a movieestablished on the Polynesian island of Rotuma. This movie was written and directed by Vilsoni Hereniko.The movie depicts the myths of Rotuman culture and the beliefs of Rotuman people.He has smartly showed this through the setting and background of the film. The culture presented in the film represents the Rotuman culture. This can be seen in the movie as the movie itself is set in Rotuma and it also can be seen through the wedding ceremonies, dances and most importantly the myth of warrior woman which is part of Rotuman history. The culture that is present in the film is a bit similar to mine in the way that, in our Indian culture we also have beliefs, myths and legends that are passed on to us from generations. Just like the myth of warrior woman in the movie we Indians also have many superstitious believes and myths. One of the myths is of “Holika” in which there was victory of good over evil. Holika was a character who supported evil and was on the wrong side. She tried to take advantage of her powers to kill a boy who was a true devotee of god but instead she herself gets trapped in her own powers and dies. Hence, Rotuman culture is similar to mine in this way however there are also some differences. The point of view conveyed in the sound track is said to be from “Viki’s” side. Vilsoni as a writer portrays his viewpoint through main character “Viki’s” perspective. It shows how she sights her culture and all the things that happen in the village and around her. The way she accepted her culture influenced my reaction to realize the importance and value of culture and tradition.The presence of the camera and film crew has influenced the actions of the characters in the movie as culture is a very important part of Pacific. Therefore, keeping that in mind the actors would have been very careful
