Changing of the Unions CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF UNIONS Since the birth of unions, their members consisted of “blue-collar” workers focused in the manufacturing department. Today, about 35% of union members are still in the manufacturing department for unions, thus demanding unions to grow bigger than just manufacturing demands to widen their member or affiliate standings. Unions have been and are evolving to increase memberships. When unions appeared more in the twenty-first century it was in an entirely new volume which led the labor union into a continually changing experience that also caused a decline in union members as well that also led in a diminish in their strength…show more content…
First off to observe is the families being affected by the employee who is putting in all the overtime and how they’re at home life and health is affected as well as how their performance at work is continuing. When an employee has to spend more and more time working, overtime that employee becomes tired, strained, has less time for their significant other, possibly loses their partner, is unable to keep up with their home life and their duties at the home, or even for their own children. This also spirals into the quality of work they demonstrate or produce. Regardless of union or non-union this is a problem for all workers, some people commute twenty hours a week on top of working fifty hours a week just to pay the bills and have to still scratch…show more content…
This is important because employees have lives to maintain outside the work area and need to take good care of them to take good care of work responsibilities as well and at home. When it becomes notes that overtime is mandatory and you will lose your job, the union needs to step in, it is really needed my the management and the union representatives to be fair and partial to their employees because there is no limit on overtime and how much is too much and there are no regulations on it by law. It allows the workers to say “no but it also allows the employer to terminitate as well. (FLSA, 1938.) The United States is an “at will” employment opportunity for everyone, this leaves the door open for employers to terminate employment at any time for no reason at all or any reason except the following, race, age, gender or disability. So if an employee can not or just simply does not want to work overtime, or is at work sick and wants to go home and says no to overtime they are able to be fired, demoted or if the boss is really mad their work hours can be
