From the early years of American society, racial tension has existed between Whites and African Americans. Many extremist groups have formed, with strong opinions regarding these racial issues. The Ku Klux Klan is the largest of these racist organizations. Their purpose is to create a society where the White Aryan population is superior and dominant. A social club called the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was formed in 1866 by six young Confederate soldiers. It began as a social club for white supremacists distinguished by elaborate rituals, hooded costumes and secret passwords. There are many local and regional KKK groups such as the Oregon Knights of the Ku Klux Klan and the New Order Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is the national and largest organization, but the only one seeking political power. The members named the Klan after the Greek word kuklos, which means circle (Company, 2009). Collectively the name means "Circle of Brothers”. The men organized the Klan as a social club or fraternity and spent their time in horseplay of various types, including wearing disguises and galloping around town late at night. They were surprised to learn that their nightly appearances were causing fear, particularly among former slaves in the area. They quickly took advantage of this effect and the group began a rapid expansion. Former slaves were the target of this terrorism, but the Klan also harassed, intimidated and even killed Northern teachers, judges, and politicians. By late 1867, the movement had spread throughout the small towns of the South (Gitlin, 2009). The KKK was equivalent to the Nazis believing in white supremacy. Just like the Nazis killed innocent Jewish people, they tortured and killed thousands and innocent African Americans.
