The Italian Job: Opening scenes Task; How do the opening scenes of the Italian Job, directed by F. Gary Gray, clearly convey to the audience that the film is part of the action genre? The Italian Job directed by F. Gary Gray in 2003, shows a group of American seasoned thieves, on a mission to break into a safe in Venice and steal some gold bullion. The opening credits clearly show the film is part of the action genre as there are different maps, times and schedules shown. This looks like a plan is being formed. The music used is also very dramatic with a constant heartbeat going through it. At the end of the credits a man is shown to sit back and sigh as if he has just finished creating a huge plan. The action genre is also portrayed through the character relationships, as the getaway boat is going through the canals; you see Lyle and Handsome Rob on the boat working on technical things together. John and Charlie, the apparent leaders are on the lookout together, whilst contacting Steve, the inside man. Steve is by himself at the crime scene and is seen breaking in. He is the only member of the group by himself. The characters are all discussing different details of the plan, you can now very clearly see this film is going to be in the action genre. The most obvious part of the opening scenes depicting the action genre is the safe cracking/ underwater scenes. During the underwater scenes the music is very muted and they only sounds are heartbeats and the ticking of the safe. The colours are very dark and the little light there is focused on the safe cracker, John, the atmosphere is very tense. The camera angles are very close up. This definitely contrasts with the boat chase between Rob and the people at the house the gold was stolen from. This is very bright and fast with loud music and sound effects. The camera angles are from far away and you don’t hear
