To be homeless is difficult to measure because so many different people have different opinions on what it means to be homeless. To overcome homelessness we must tackle the root causes, of course provide them a stable living environment, but also have systems in place to treat why people are homeless be it medical, employment, disaster. Asking complete strangers for money is very hard for most individuals. When someone becomes starving, it becomes easier to ask individuals for money. The begging almost becomes a last resort at ensuring the panhandler that they won’t die from starvation one more day. We cannot stop earthquakes, we cannot prevent droughts, and we cannot prevent all conflict, but when we know where the hungry, the homeless and the sick exist, then we can help. When walking down the street in big cities, you might see a panhandler begging for money.
A Sociological View of Homelessness SOCI-200 D01 Instructor: Professor J. Cole The homeless are looked at as the low of the low, the bane of society. Some Christian believers look at the homeless and simply feel that if they were to apply themselves, they would not be homeless. Other Christian believers feel sorry for the homeless and want to help. With the endless problems facing our economy these days, the nation is seeing a surge in the number of homeless people. In a recent approximation USA Today estimated 1.6 million people unduplicated persons used transitional housing or emergency shelters.
There are many social problems that are associated with homelessness in Pinellas County. Financial problems such as: job loss, not making enough money and not being to afford rent/mortgage is related to the homelessness in Pinellas County (PIT, 2011). Criminal behavior is another social problem related to homelessness. According to Chamard (2010) persons who are homeless involves themselves in criminal activity for survival such as stealing, panhandling and peddling. Many of these homeless individuals may have had a pre existing substance abuse problem and became homeless because family members were no longer willing to enable self-destructive behavior. In a case like this, the individual essentially chooses to be homeless instead of obtaining assistance for his or her substance abuse issues. Another example of using critical thinking to understand the cause of an issue can be made by trying to understand mental illness among the homeless population. An inference can be made that mentally ill individuals become homeless as a result of his or her inability to provide a stable environment for his or herself. This is based on the assumption that mentally ill individuals
A substantial percentage of the U.S. homeless population are individuals who are chronically unemployed or have difficulty managing their lives effectively due to prolonged and severe drug and/or alcohol abuse. According surveys, I think high unemployment rate and low employment rate, mental illness and domestic violence can cause people becoming homeless in America. Poverty is closely linked to homeless. Premise two says if we can do good without causing a significant negative change in our lifestyle then we should do so, this premise suggest that good should be done if your life isn’t negatively impacted or there is no change at all. I believe this because people will be more willing to help others and do something good so as long as it doesn’t hinder them in any way. An application of my argument would be as follows: I was at McDonalds ordering food and after I paid for my meal I saw a donation box in front of the cash register that read; in support of famine relief or children with cancer, something along those lines so I decided to donate the money I received from the cashier after I paid for my meal. No one made me give away my money to support this particular cause, yet I decided to do so because it wouldn’t negatively
Nervous? People take risks for many different reasons, but maybe the biggest reason is that there is a payoff that they get by accepting risk. So whether you are poor and desperate and need to take a shot at a better life, you are an investor trying to make a living, or if you are just trying to have a more interesting more enriching life, it usually starts with some risk. One reason you might take a risk is if you are desperate. For example, if you were part of a very poor family and could not afford to pay for daily needs such as food, you might take the risk of robbing a grocery store.
