The Island of serendipity The Greeks called it Taprobane, the Arabs called it Serendib, the British called it Ceylon, and I call it home. But you may recognize it as the pearl of the Indian Ocean, or as the ‘J’ pendent of India, or simply as Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is island located in southern Asia which lies in the Indian Ocean, and it about 31 Kilometers off the southern coast of India. It is a tiny island with 65,610 square kilometers of natural beauties from golden beaches to misty mountains. The first people to have inhabited the island are known as indo-Aryans, and it is believed that the arrival of the north Indian king named vijaya established the Sinhala race. Centuries later the island was invaded by the Portuguese, Dutch, and the British. Later in 1948 the country got their independence. With the indo-Aryan palaces, the English style buildings, the golden sandy beaches and shady palms trees, the clear aquamarine water, the wild life and exotic foods have kept tourists and travelers interested in this island for a long time. From all attractions there are three most famous attractions such as the coasts, the hill country, and the ancient ruins. To cover all three areas a three week vacation would be the best. Kandy Kandy is located in the central part of the country where I call home, and is also called the hill country because of the misty mountains. For over centuries Kandy has been a tourist attraction area, because of its location, the breathtakingly beautiful architecture of some buildings and the lush green tea estates boasts the beauty of Kandy. More importantly Kandy has been tourist attraction area because of the Kandy palace and Dalada (tooth of Lord Buddha). Kandy was the last palace of Sri Lanka before the English concurred the island. The best time to visit Kandy is July, because once every year the relic is displayed to the public
