Amanda kept a lot of secrets to herself, like that she was pregnant and that she was black mailing Cherry’s dad. When Amanda’s body was found down at the waterfront it turned out that she was pregnant. No-body knew about this, not her friends or her boyfriend, not even her family knew about this. In the novel Kate stated that she knew nothing of this. She said “There were things Amanda wasn’t telling her.” Amanda didn’t share a lot of her secrets with the people in the group which just shows that the group didn’t really know her at all.
Melinda was an outcast. She started school with everyone hating her. Her old friends ignored her and even the kids she barely talked to in middle school; now talk about her behind her back. Her best friend Rachel tells her she hates her. She lost all her friends and has no one to talk to and share her feelings to, besides Heather.
A main example from the book is that Melinda kept this huge secret held inside. She was too fearful to share it with anyone so instead she decided to keep it her secret. This turned out to be extremely detremental to her well being. It caused her grades to drop, she became an intravert, not wanting to speak to anyone or function properly as a teenager, she isolated herself from others and had no motivation to do anything. Melinda turned from being a loving young lady who had a close relationship with her parents to a recluse who became distant to her parents, friends and everyone.

She never told or showed people how miserable she felt about moving. When Evyn first saw Eleni, with her red lipstick, black pants, and high heels, she thought Eleni looked nothing like a college professor and a mother.
She didn’t enjoy her time spent there so why she was so willing to come back. Some people never get enough of the life they live even if it‘s bad . Its just like a women who is in a abusive relationship and we wonder why the never leave. Its because once someone adapted to a certain life style the desire for change is slim to none. The narrative made it clear that she didn’t fit in with the people in her town but feared leaving because that lifestyle was all she ever known.
In order to forget who she was, Edith created an alter-ego of herself, and tried to become that alter-ego, she never really knew the difference between what was important, and what wasn't. As the saying goes, blood is thicker than water, but apparently Edith didn't know that saying or what it meant, because she was so set on trying to impress people who didn't matter, that she pushed away her family, the ones who did matter. No matter how hard Edith tried, she could never make her fantasy life a reality. Even when she was beginning to turn her dream into real life, she doubted herself, and began to realize that she was wrong. Edith discovered that what she
And you were given that chance when mine was taken away from me due to our own stupidity. You know I was never into that whole literature stuff that Mrs. Blackwell had always been forcing us to write (and I’ve noticed that she hasn’t
