“Apostles of Disunion” In Apostles of Disunion, Charles Dew attempted to explain what led to the South’s decision to secede and ultimately cause a civil war. The one reoccurring theme he brings up as the major reason for the South’s secession was their widespread pro slavery attitude held at the time. Dew believed that if slavery had not existed, then the civil war would have never occurred. Throughout his writings he showed this Southern pro slavery attitude and used several examples to support this idea. Two of his best used examples were the the popular propaganda speeches made by slave owners in attempt to gain allegiance against the North and the South’s almost hatred of the Republican Party as a whole.
Besides being just against slavery he was also fought for women’s rights. He thought that blacks should not be able to vote if the women could not either. Douglass believed that everyone’s input would be important, not just men. As the Civil War approached, Douglass felt that if the war was to end slavery then the black slaves should fight alongside the soldiers. When the war was over slavery was abolished but in the Presidential Election of 1864, Douglass did not support Lincoln because he felt that Lincoln was not enforcing that the blacks still could not vote, instead he supported John C. Fremont.

The American Anti-Slavery Society was established in 1833, but abolitionist sentiment antedated the republic. For example, the charter of Georgia prohibited slavery, and many of its settlers fought a losing battle against allowing it in the colony, Before independence, Quakers, most black Christians, and other religious groups argued that slavery was incompatible with Christ's teaching. Moreover, a number of revolutionaries saw the glaring contradiction between demanding freedom for themselves while holding slaves.

The idea of a march was first conceived in 1941, when Randolph threatened President Franklin D. Roosevelt to assemble 100,000 African Americans in the capital, if he refused to sign an executive order banning discrimination in the defense industries and creating the Fair Employment Committee. Randolph’s idea sparked up again more than 20 years later. His main focus for the march was the same as the previous marches. He along with others demanded equality in the job industries and education. In a December 1962 meeting, Randolph and Bayard Dustin began to plan the March on Washington.
Therefore the South and their political leaders were promoters of slavery. One of the most adamant pro-slavery politicians was John C. Calhoun. Calhoun even believed that slavery was actually great for slaves. The census of 1840 and other records showed that, northern states had abolished slavery. Needless to say, Calhoun was determined to make slavery legal in the new states, and believed that the north had motives behind their intentions to do otherwise.
How accurate are they? a. Part of the regional tensions were due the northern delegates wanting to end slavery and the southern delegates wanting to increase slavery .Mason of Virginia was against slavery, he felt the government should have more power over slavery. His predictions are pretty accurate. Ellsworth from Connecticut considered in moral light, ought to free those already in the country.
Their goal was to abolish slavery completely and prevent it from harming many people. By sacrificing their lives into the war, this shows how devoted they are to putting an end to slavery even though the Reconstruction failed. The filmmakers’ goals when making this movie were to show how slavery was the reason why the Civil War was being fought. Throughout the movie, the African American soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry underwent harsh training as well as being treated unequally. They were used for manual labor and nothing else until Robert Gould Shaw stepped up for the soldiers to have them fight in the war.
Providing the Confederacy with war supplies influenced Southern power, and their assertiveness towards the Union proved beneficial to international relations. The victory of the Union encouraged the forces in Britain that demanded more democracy and public contribution into the political system. Rather than an outbreak of war, relations between America and Britain were ultimately improved when the idea of widespread famine threatened England. The American Civil War proved difficult but eventually beneficial for Britain, giving them the opportunity to check their growth and rise to power. At the time slaves were still legal in the south; therefore the act of of helping them escape to freedom was illegal. The appeal for freedom was very strong and there were many blacks speaking out on the issue. On unique piece of reading was the “Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World”, by David Walker. Walker was born free in North Carolina but still saw a better end for his brothers in the south. His writing was an appeal to the injustice of slavery in the Southern states, using political and religious means to convey his ideas.
