Arnaud Marquet Josh Diamond English 106 22 January 2012 The influence of religion on wars! In today’s world, a common misconception is that religion is one of the main reasons for a war to start. I am going to dispute that conventional belief, but not in the ways it is usually challenged by people who identify themselves as religious. I will argue that the real motivation behind so-called religious wars is in fact economic and political, not religious. As the American civil war leader Abraham Lincoln put it almost 150 years ago: "The will of God prevails. In great contests, each party claims to act in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, but one must be wrong. God cannot be for and against the same thing at the same time."I agree that religion may create some violence, but their beginning invariably lies in factors such as ethnicity, identity, power struggles, resources, inequality and oppression and one factor is often worsened by another. The only reason why religion is put in as a cause to go to war is because governments know that it is the best way to support them. Religion is a big part of how people think and act, so it is very easy for governments to slide in some truth and cover up the rest of the other reasons with religion and they will get a large group of followers. Since the start of history, only a few wars have been religious wars such as the Crusades, the French Wars of Religion, the Thirty Year’s War, and the Lebanese Civil war. All of those wars were fought at least 30 years ago. In the modern world, countries usually have bigger reasons to go to war than to fight over religion. An example would be the Vietnam War, where the U.S. tried to contain the spread of communism and create democracy in Asia.
