The 18th and 19th centuries constituted a remarkable period in history. During this time period, significant strides were made in a multitude of aspects of human life, including medicine, art, and music. However, during this period, one advance stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of influence upon history as we now know it; this is the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was a movement that found its origins in the United Kingdom; it soon spread throughout the rest of Europe. It was a truly revolutionary movement; as a famous American economist named Robert Lucas once stated, “For the first time in history, the living standards of the masses of ordinary people [had] begun to undergo sustained growth. ... Nothing remotely like this economic behavior [had] happened before.” This essay will characterize the Industrial Revolution and its origins and will analyze the changes found in European society during this time period.
The Industrial Revolution’s birthplace was the United Kingdom, for a variety of reasons. A significant boost in population occurring in the 18th century, caused by significant advances in agriculture, was one of these key reasons; this factor, combined with Britain’s natural surplus of coal, copper, iron, lead, and tin, helped provide the natural foundations for the Industrial Revolution. Thanks to enclosure of common land and the agricultural revolution, a supply of labor was readily available. Also, Britain received a great amount of natural resources from its numerous colonies, thus providing a further surplus of resources, facilitating the occurrence of the Industrial Revolution. In addition, Britain was in a particularly prosperous economic stage in their history; a greater liberalization of trade from a merchant standpoint led to more effective utilization of scientific and technological advances; Britain was also one of the few countries that emerged from the Napoleonic wars relatively unscathed economically, and...
