The Importance of Learning Phonology and Pronunciation for Teacher A. The Nature of Phonology and Pronunciation Phonology is the study of the sounds systems. Phonological analysis involves determining the rules that govern how phonemes are produced at the surface level by investigating the environment in which each allophone is produced. Meanwhile the pronunciation is the practice of sounding a word in correct pronunciation. Since English is a language that has no consistency between the written codes and its saying, it is important for everyone to be familiar with English pronunciation problems with the main focus on sounds, word stress, phrase stress, sentence stress, connected speech, and intonation. In pronunciation, we learn how to recognize individual sounds or groups of sounds that cause problems to speakers of particular languages, recognize weak and strong forms and word linking, practice and be well-trained to hear different types of intonation, be exposed to word stress, phrase stress, and sentence stress (intonation), practice everyday English in which meaning is normally internationally understood, but in which pronunciation is often difficult, for example saying names of a country, saying fractions, temperature, time, century, etc. In pronunciation we also learn the phonemics symbols and spelling. By learning phonemic symbols, we can work out our pronunciation for ourselves from the dictionary. In other words, phonology and pronunciation train us to understand the systems of the sounds and to know and pronounce the words correctly. It also provides us the knowledge of knowing the sounds represented by letter combinations. Those who have a background in systematic phonology may have more highly developed recognition skills in pronunciation. B.
