Introduction. The title of this assignment; ‘The Importance of Infection Control for the Individual, Community and the Workplace’ in itself requires little or no explanation. If infections are not prevented and/or controlled they will spread and as a result the consequences are quite undesirable; people can get very sick indeed and in some cases they may even die. In our workplace, which is a healthcare environment, the importance of infection control is even greater and cannot be understated. We care for patients, be they elderly and weak, sick or both. Most of us who work in this special area do so out of a sense of calling – something like a vocation. We care deeply about or jobs and the people under our care. Unfortunately most of those in our care are elderly and there are many things they are unable to do for themselves; such as washing themselves which is vital to the prevention and control of infections being spread. Many in our care have also got weakened immune systems and as a consequence are more susceptible to infection from the outset. We want to give the patients in our care the best treatment and quality of care possible and this would not be possible without infection control. Were we to neglect patient control their quality of life and indeed health would deteriorate, they would get sick and suffer and in extreme cases would die. This runs totally contrary to the attitudes, duties and commitments we hold so dear as healthcare workers. In this assignment I will introduce, explain and discuss one of the most topical worldwide infections in the workplace – mainly hospitals and other places of healthcare environment; MRSA. I will give an overview of the disease itself including symptoms and consequences, how it is spread, how it may be treated and how it may be controlled and prevented.
