GE217 Friday 6:00 Crossing the Line How is illegal immigration affecting you? Everyday there are illegal immigrants crossing over our borders onto American soil. There are around 24 million illegal aliens in this country at any given time. These immigrants are bringing down the American quality of life, even if that is not their main intention. I understand that these people are likely just trying to better their own life or the lives of their family. This should not come at a cost for us. I am against illegal immigration because it is against the law to be in this country without taking the proper steps, illegal immigrants are a source of cheap labor which takes work away from American citizens, and they are using resources such as schools and hospitals without paying taxes. Who wouldn’t want to pay a lower price to get their flooring installed? So who suffers? The owners if these businesses are losing work to these illegal immigrants every day. In March of 2006, The Center for Immigration Studies states that “between March 2000 and March 2005, only 9 percent of the net increase in jobs for adults went to people born in the United States.”(2) There is also a website called immigrationcounters.com that shows money being wired to Mexico since January 2006 is up to $28,677,499,188. That is a substantial amount of money not being spent in the United States to help stimulate the economy.
