In most literature nowadays authors like to argue or set controversy so it receives the readers attention. When writing you don’t have to have the reader always agree with you 100%, but you want them to think about your point of view which may cause controversy between you and the reader. Often to amateur writers, the process of writing seems like a chore; a mountain of words to sieve through before they can create a comprehensible wall of text. Lamott uses witty lines and anecdotes from famous writers to show that everyone faces the same problem and provides a simple enough solution. In my mind at least, this short piece has enabled me to look at essays in a different manner. That it’s alright to make mistakes and your first draft can be like throwing poop at a blank canvas; you can always clean it up later. In persuading her readers, Lamott uses ethos, logos and pathos to great effect.
The interview would also put pressure on us by looking at that us all the time instead of writing something down to make it look professional. I would also sometimes speak too fast which showed I was nervous which wasn’t good for the role play we was doing. How we could have improved the interview There are many ways we could have improved the interview for example we could have practice the role play and remembered the lines better. The interviewer could have pretended to write something which would have put less pressure on me which would have made me less nervous. At the end instead of only asking 2 questions I could have asked one more which would look really professional.
These words are also very encouraging and eye-opening to me because I used to think the emotions described were a sign that I was not truly a writer. It is refreshing and comforting to know that even a successful novelist such as Waters experiences the doubt, fear, and strain that I feel when writing. I have more of a respect for “Jon Krakhauer” than I did when I first read this story. His attention to detail is a good thing where as I saw it as a bad thing. I need to use more large words and add more stories to my essays so as a writer I respect him and can see that he is a good writer. After writing my own essays, I can see now that it is not easy but to put, as much detail as he did into his essay would be a truly difficult thing for me. Also using many large words in the way that he did to support his ideas, and make his points is not easy.
The person(s) that are placed in a position to oversee things must be allowed to make changes where they deem necessary. I know a lot of words; I just don’t use them in my everyday conversation, thus making it more difficult to incorporate in my essay. The other parts I was dissatisfied with were my introduction and conclusion. After the revision of my paper I noticed they needed tremendous work. Timothy Taylor, a bestselling, award-winning novelist and journalist, adapts good characters and a good storyline but not adequate structure. His character switching happened excessively and focused too much on one character but not the others. The overuse on details in some sections was a major turn-off, while others did not have enough details to satisfy an average reader. His style of writing was also very odd for a writer. Throughout his novel, Taylor could not seem to find the in between place for anything.
“Whenever we write, whether it’s an email to a friend or a toast for a wedding, an English essay or a resume, we face some kind or rhetorical situation” (Bullock, Goggin 1). There are many different ways to get your point across when it comes to writing, but without a strategy, your point will not be heard. You have to consider what your rhetorical situation is before you start. Bullock and Goggins had some great strategies to go by when it comes to writing. They believed that, “We have a purpose, a certain audience, a particular stance, a genre, and a medium to consider- and often as not a design” (Bullock, Goggin 1).
Introduction Writing essay is not easy thing to do. Selecting an appropriate topic, making an outline, organizing every sentences and paragraphs become unity and coherence are not enough to produce an essay inasmuch as writers have to be able to narrate and describe their argument, experience and knowledge in their writing in which it can attract the readers to take a look, enjoy their writing and feel satisfied when they finish reading the essay.
