The day my life changed was the day two small, eight-year-old, limited-English-speaking, Haitian boys stepped off a plane on April 11, 2013. My world was turned upside-down when my two cousins, Eli and Fritzner, were adopted. It took five years for them to come home, but every minute was worth it. In 2009, my Aunt Kelleigh and my mom began taking trips to a small country, next to the Dominican Republic, called Haiti. They helped out in an orphanage, caring for the poverty-stricken children living there (participial). While there, they met two young boys named Marc-Eli and Fritzner. My aunt’s heart was touched by the devastating state of these boys’ reality. I can’t remember being directly told the big news, but I came to realize that my aunt and uncle were going to adapt Eli and Fritzner. Naturally, there was so much to be done to prepare for a family addition of two boys (preposition). For my whole life, my brother, Sam, and I were best friends with my biological cousins, Owen and Bennett. We grew up together, played together, laughed together, did everything together. It took some time, but we came to understand it would no longer just be us four. The time was noon. Somewhere, up in the clouds, was an airplane carrying my aunt, uncle, and two newly adopted cousins. Our entire family was crowded together in that airport, our hearts full of anticipation. Sam, Owen, Bennett, and I stood by the window, scanning the sky for the airplane. Finally, a faint dot grew closer and closer until a giant airplane was landing before our eyes. The airport fell silent, our hearts pounding and tears brimming, as the doors swung open and two thin, Haitian boys, one eight and one seven, walked into the room.
