This essay will focus on the implementation of the National Professional Standards for Teachers in Australia (AITSL 2012), and discuss how these standards impact on the differing career stages of the teaching profession. The National Professional Standards for Teachers impacts on one’s professional knowledge, professional performance and professional commitment. Hence, I will be providing a brief overview of the standard number 4, “Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments” to further compare and contrast this focus area for a graduate and lead teachers so that they may demonstrate attainment of this focus area in their professional practice In order to promote active student engagement it is of utmost importance to ensure that there is student participation support in all schools as it is an essential aspect of the teaching profession that supports demonstration of positive behaviours and regular attendance. It is logical that students who feel happy, healthy and safe are more likely to fulfil their educational potential, which can only be done when there is a positive school culture that engages their students and supports their learning 100 per cent. Research conducted internationally shows that there is “…a strong correlation between students’ learning, longer term life outcomes, attendance at school, and appropriate participation in educational programs” (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development 2013). In the focus area of supporting student participation, graduate teachers should ‘identify strategies to encourage student participation engagement in classroom activities” (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development 2013). Strategies that could be adopted include multi level instruction, whole language, cooperative learning, peer tutoring, integrated lessons and creative problem solving, which can all be catered
