With advancements in technology, some students have chosen to complete their schoolwork through the Internet, rather than in traditional classrooms. Those who support a traditional classroom approach to learning argue that it provides more of an opportunity for students to interact with the teacher and other students. Those who feel that learning over the Internet is better argue that it allows students to learn anytime and anywhere they choose. Cyber bullying is worse than normal bullying because it occurs on the internet, which is a much larger scale. The internet has become very common in today's society. It has played a major role in the social lives of many children. They are able to shop, communicate, and make good friends just by using the internet. People are also able to distribute information to a lot of people in very little time.
However, college students need to understand that using social networking sites religiously is not just an issue about the amount of time devoted towards schoolwork, but that it can literally change how they think. Social networking sites, along with Google and Wikipedia, are influencing how college students process information. Facebook is a great tool to keep in touch with friends, but the Internet needs to be used for educational purposes. Although the Internet can be used for educational purposes, the usage of sites like Facebook, Wikipedia, and Google have negatively changed the way college students think. Some credit can be laid upon the student, but ultimately we as a society need to fundamentally change how people use the Internet.
Some of the common use of World Wide Web is to gain knowledge in research. When students are doing their home works, instead of going to the library and spending a little more time, they just need to go in front of the computer and search for the topic that they are researching on. Using the internet as a learning resource is somehow more efficient than books when it comes to time. But when it comes to reliability, books are still the best options for us to research since anybody can write, edit, and publish an article on the Web. Internet helped us to communicate with the ones we loved especially those who are far from us.
WEB 2.0 The internet has advanced rapidly from the time it was first created. The new generation 2.0 has made life easy for a lot of people. In doing so the internet has also reduces humans from being their natural selves. People have become so dependent on the internet. Humans cannot do a lot without a computer; they use it to communicate, socialize, to help each other for their jobs.
Tevin Hutchinson 11/10/2012 English 102 Technology plays a huge role in our everyday life. I do believe that technology has made our lives easier, but it also has made us more dependent on the technology itself. When using the internet for a dictionary you could easily get distracted. Anyone can put anything on the internet, so what you find might not be accurate. Most people find that looking things up on the internet is distracting because you are already on the web so why not check YouTube for a funny video, or update your status on the social network.
It probably took them twice as long just to get things done. One of the biggest improvements in technology that helps the classroom would be the internet. Many times there is just not enough information from books and magazines, and students now can access all different kinds of information using the internet. Students can also create websites which will assist them and make the job of the teacher easier. This is fun for the students to do, and they can post short stories, poems, class homework, and many personally created activities.
Nicholas Carr's article "Is Google Making us Stupid?" explores the social and cognitive effects of the internet on the twenty first century. By his interpretation, the internet has had a positive impact on civilization, especially academia as "research that once required days in the stacks or periodical rooms of libraries can now be done in minutes" (para. 3). The internet also serves as a boon to literacy rates as "we may well be reading more today than we did in the 1970s" as more people choose to use the text based internet.
Informative videos and study aids are also available at the touch of a finger for students who struggle in certain subject. Overall, students participating in these forms of study outperform students using only conventional textbooks. Additionally, ipads cut down greatly on time wasted within the classroom. Instead of transcribing every miniscule note the teacher makes onto paper, students can have the option to take pictures of important charts and documents, or to even video a lecture for later reference. The opportunities are endless within the classroom with the addition of an ipad, and I would love to reap the benefit.
The Internet is the leading distractor in young students and adults. A few other causes include Social networks, gaming, and television play a huge toll in student’s schedules and are pushing into studying time. Little do students know that the internet has assisted with spotting someone else’s work within theirs, “with the rise of the Internet, cheating has become easier--and easier to detect” States McCollum. (McCollum, S. 2002). Procrastinating is also a sign that the student does not take an interest in the subject or feel they do not need to put as much effort because they feel they are already educated enough to pull off the assignment in a short period of time leading to stress factors that also change the quality of the work.
