The Impact of Technology on Businesses “Technology is the development of methods of production or products that help us do things faster – and often more cheaply”. Businesses that embrace new technologies are usually able to adapt quickly to changes in the market. This new technology usually means products become cheaper and a larger variety can become available. Some major technological developments in the Timber Products and Furniture Industries area include: CAD/CAM, The Wood Wizz, CNC mills and lathes, Point to Point Router Systems, Colorply, CNC Table Saws, Multi Borer. Computer Aided Drawing allows designers to draw their plans in a much quicker time than using traditional methods. This information can then be used with Computer Aided Manufacture software to actually make the product. The CAM software allows the CAD drawing to be followed by the equipment needed to make the product. The Wood Wizz is an Australian invention that is used to flatten large pieces of timber such as slabs. It is a two step process. The first step involves using a router attached to the Wood Wizz to remove the larger pieces of timber to give the slab a flat surface. The second step involves attaching a sander to the Wood Wizz and finishing the flattening operation on the slab. This machine means that timber that good quality and/or hard to find timber can be used in large sections by the TP and FI instead of chipped and used on gardens or as fire wood. Computer Numerically Controlled milling machines and lathes help to speed up the production process and remove human error. The machine is programmed using a keypad, linking to a computer with a design already drawn or by inserting a floppy disk that has the design on it. CNC machines use co-ordinates to program the movements of the tools. Point to Point Router Systems use CAD/CAM
