Liu 1 Kenny Liu Professor Jenae Reese English 101 07/09/2013 Does watching TV make you smarter or a better TV watcher? Steven Johnson, an author and a columnist in New York Times, published an essay in New York Times called “Watching TV Makes You Smarter” in 2005. In the essay, he argued that watching TV could make the viewer smarter instead of being an idiot box. He made this statement because of “The Sleeper Curve”, which Johnson introduced this term in the essay. Because of Sleeper Curve, according to Johnson, TV viewers need to improve their skill to watch modern TV shows with multiple plot lines.
The media has an affect on all age groups from children to teenagers and young adults, and from older adults to senior citizens. The media affects society through multiple ways rather it be a book a TV show or just a normal Sunday paper. There are many different ways and opportunities for the media to influence our society through these types of media. One way society is affected because the TV and other types of media allow businesses and companies to advertise there products or company from have an add on a commercial on the TV or radio or having your add on a page in the paper or magazine. This allows businesses to influence their customers to buy from or some how use their business rather than other businesses.
This is just another example of how TV has had a negative impact on Presidential elections. Whether it be image or ratings, television has had a negative effect on presidential elections and America may be suffering for it. As a nation we are more likely to choose the better looking candidate even if we aren't so sure about his views and ideals. Elections used to be all about views and ideals and now it has become a popularity contest, of who has the best hair and who gets the better ratings on
The mass media is the means by which messages and images are communicated to a mass audience, it does this through its various Mass Communication Technologies (MCTs), and for instance the Internet is a very powerful and influential MCT communicating worldwide. MCTs educate, persuade and inform as well as entertain their audience. Media is geographically dispersed and has no limits due to its global domination. It is also culturally diverse and socially mixed. Pluralists believe that the mass media is reflective of social reality, and acts as a 'mirror'.
How do the media represent disabilities? “Media coverage plays a crucial role in educating the public on disability issues” People are influenced by many media sources; these images affect our perceptions in many ways. What we see, hear and read in the media is often decided and influenced by a small group of decision makers. These editors, producers, programmers and budget-controllers are swayed by their own opinions of disability and what they believe will bring in audiences. They output dominant ideologies with which they mould society into obedience, shaping Britain in to a society who mostly agree with their hegemonic superiors.
Advertising Synthesis Essay The growth of media has paved the way for numerous outlets for advertising. Millions of people reading magazines, watching TV, listening to the radio and surfing the web are constantly bombarded with ads for different products or services. Although the creation of media has given us great power and knowledge, we see its consequences in our personal lives and in society as a whole. Advertising has altered the perception of wants versus needs, which has led to a significant change of the economy and its consumer capital. Whether many would prefer to admit or not, advertising has changed society- modifying the way Americans think and act in today's day and age, though not entirely for the better.
The essay concludes with the idea that there is a transformational current going on, and social media is not only changing the way we interact with one another, but it is also affecting our brains, having a psychological effect on us. DiSalvo’s studies and opinions about social networking sites are appealing and make a lot of sense, especially with the sudden increase of Facebook use in the recent years; I can personally say I agree with the psychological effects social networking, more specifically, Facebook has taken in my life. The style DiSalvo used in his argument and used to persuade the reader was the Toulmin model in which he uses claims of
I would definitely say that Comedy Central's Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert Report are part of the "media" that affects people’s opinion. These television shows are a way to provide comedic relief to the issues our economy faces; however, these shows still have an impact of how the viewer will understand an issue at hand. It is very difficult for anyone to be completely unbiased and with constantly hearing other people’s opinion through the media. We cannot make a decision of how “we” feel about the topic. Thus, democracy and a fair voting group become tainted.

Many people with low self-esteem and whom have a high tolerance for technology may argue with this fact and defend that it is fun. Although Gabler's assertion is correct, entertainment has also reached the common ground of being manipulative and influential to its audience, leading to have the capacity to ruin society. Entertainment, especially television, has a great amount of influence amongst children and teenagers of today's generation. Although television broadcasting don't have harmful intentions toward people, it still has a negative effect on its viewers.
Also, why I chose this topic, concerning it is a very important subject and a problem that keeps rising today. Both videos have a specific type of audience their directed towards, although both messages are directed towards a specific type of audience. These two texts I chose both have the same overall message, they’re just directed towards a different group of audience. These two texts send messages to different groups of audiences, to help show the widespread people that are abusing these substances. The video concerning Robin Williams addresses substance abuse in the celebrity social world.
