MALLISA SAMSON QUESTION: What are the key traits of a “happy leader” in contemporary sub-Saharan Africa? Name any current leaders you would categorize as “happy leaders.” The term “happy leader” means something different for each person. It is therefore relative. For instance every philosopher has his view of a “happy leader”. Below are some of the views of different philosophers. According to Augustine, a happy ruler is one who rules with justice, loves God and fears him. Therefore Augustine believes that for a ruler to be happy he must be just and God fearing. I agree with Augustine because, I believe that God is the supreme ruler and that there is no way a leader can be happy when he disobeys he disobeys the one above him. I also agree that a happy leader should be just. The purpose of a leader to created organisation in the community and also act as a parent to his subjects. Therefore I do not believe that a leader can be happy when he is treating his subjects with injustice. Theophilus of Antioch says that a king is supposed to be honoured and not worshipped as God. Theophilus does not really tackle the question of what makes a leader happy. But I guess he must be saying that it does not really matter whether a leader is happy or not as long as he is honoured. Well am sure ever leader is honoured, but I do not think honour alone makes a leader happy. It is very bad for someone to get into leadership merely for honour without serving the people. I therefore agree with Antioch that all leaders are honoured but happiness comes from serving your subjects well. On the other had Gregory says that a king is chosen by his subjects
