After reading and watching all three passages, one can make the conclusion that there are many different methods towards education and interpret which method Rodriguez was taught. The types of relationships Rodriguez had with his teachers, family and in life was affected by specific styles of education and as he looked through Freire’s lens of the banking concept, he came to realized that that method of education had a detrimental effect on his life. Early on in Rodriguez’s essay he illustrates the characteristics of an automaton which confirmed Freire’s views regarding the banking concept. Despite his definition of a “scholarship boy”, Rodriguez lacked self confidence which led him to be overpowered by his teachers and his books. Through Freire’s lens, Rodriguez would be considered a waste basket.
According to Paulo Freire, "Education is suffering from narration sickness." Students are given information, and they are expected to memorize the information, this is known as the banking concept. If the students only memorize the information, are they even learning what the information truly means or are they just memorizing the information long enough to take a test? The "Banking" Concept of Education is not only ineffective but also contributes to students suffering with the inability to think for themselves and creatively. In his essay, The "Banking" Concept of Education, Paulo Freire basically states that education is simply just a teacher who lectures all class period, filling the student's memory with information, and he or she merely accepts that the information is correct.
If Freire were to analyze Rodriguez’s essay, he would say that Rodriguez was a banking – method student for the majority of his educational career. Rodriguez would prove him wrong by breaking the habit of being that type of student. It seems that Rodriguez became obsessed with becoming something that he was not and he himself was not even aware of it. Freire would say that Rodriguez was a “depository” since Rodriguez would take in the information his teachers would give him without exactly knowing why he was being taught a certain topic. It would also seem that Rodriguez was not full human.
Freire speaks on what Rodriguez was going through at the early part of his schooling. Freire writes “This is the “Banking” Concept education, in which scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing , and storing the deposits.”(Freire244)) Freire saying that Rodriguez memorizing and imitating the teachers every move and announcement the teacher said that he was a victim of his own schooling. When Freire says, “filed away through the lack of creativity, transformation, and knowledge” By memorizing and repeating everything the
He argues that without social solidarity, social life would be impossible as everyone would pursue their own selfish desires and not work together to get what they want out of life. The education system helps to create this social solidarity by transmitting society's ideas from one generation to the next. For example, Durkheim argues that teaching of a countries history instil a sense of a shared heritage and commitment to the wider social group. However Marxists argue this social solidarity is just brainwashing students into thinking that everyone in society today is equal and that we are all part of society, while we are really just getting exploited by the bourgeoisie. People are just being led into a sense of false class consciousness and are being persuaded into thinking they have the same values of everyone else when they actually haven't.
Paulo Freire came up with a theory that education is “just an act of depositing, in which the students are the depositories and the teacher is the depositor.” (Page 1: Pedagogy of the Oppressed) He goes on to say that the banking concept does not allow a “dialogue” between student and teacher and that the student becomes a passive person from the lack of this communication. He tries to explain to his readers that banking trains people to being passive later in life. He goes on to say that he pities teachers because they do not realize that they are “banking” today’s new generation. Those who use the banking approach, knowingly or unknowingly (for there are innumerable well-intentioned bank-clerk teachers who do not realize that they are serving to only dehumanize), fail to perceive that the deposits themselves contain contradictions about reality. (Page 3: Pedagogy of the Oppressed) Paulo Freire thinks that teachers and students are separated through a “dichotomy” and that we don’t communicate with each other.
Freire describes the banking system that acts as the backbone of our American education system as a system that stands to maintain two roles for those involved, that of the oppressed and that of the oppressor. He speaks directly to the traditional relationship between a teacher and their students and describes this relationship as a one-way interaction, where the all-knowing teacher deposits information into the child as if they were an empty receptacle, devoid of self-thought. This ultimately sets the tone of dominance where the teacher tells the student what is so and the student will accept it without an opportunity to discuss the proposed information within the context of the students’ own experiences. Freire’s assessment of the established way of teaching and learning, which he has coined as the “banking system” does not differentiate between those students who have access to an abundant number of educational resources that go beyond the classroom versus those students who’s only resource is the classroom itself. It is this lack of acknowledgement of socio-economic inequalities within our educational system that makes Freire’s proposed solution of moving towards a “problem-posing” system one that still only benefits those school districts who can afford to provide the resources to apply this new way of teaching.
They won’t help people who need them if these people don’t have money. This money will effects on education budget while this money should be spent on things that can help the student achievements like teachers training and modern labs facilities. Teacher training about modern teaching techniques is very important. Many researches which made on young students shows that
Education: How the Nation Stays Afloat and the Students Sink American culture plays a critical role in how our educational systems were designed. American culture has created the myth that is, without a formal education, success, creativity and individuality are impossible to achieve. However, schools are not assisting the students in their pursuit of success and individuality. The educational system was produce with another mission in mind; suppress the student’s intelligence and creativity, increase funds with Corporate America by manipulating the handicap schools and assign each student a social role and aid them in developing that role only. Schools are not as helpful as we may have perceived, they discreetly create docile citizens by giving the illusion that the system is developing each student.
Overtime I grew frustrated and noticed that the only way I’d make it in this life is to settle my nose down into some state educational program to get a paper that shows my worth to this earth. When I say worth I don’t want to make you think in terms of money, even though that’s exactly what school and learning is about for many people. The more you know in your field of study the more you make salary-wise. I just want to know more so I can help people and friends figure out what they want out of their life and how to fulfill their personal purpose. When working with people you must understand when and how to communicate.
