The Hunger Games and Divergent: When Big Government Goes Wrong
Today, there are many books and movies about the future and they don’t normally show it in a good light. At a young age, kids today are being exposed to what the world could end up like, especially since these forms of entertainment are so accessible. Many authors who write young adult novels have been taking the opportunity to write intricate stories about the future with their own morals and causes built in. Two major works that are getting a lot of attention right now are the Hunger Games and Divergent. Suzanne Collins and Veronica Roth both took up the challenge of writing some pretty heavy stuff for young readers and still managed to get their messages across. With both stories being set in post-apocalyptic dystopian societies, the Hunger Games and Divergent book series’ seem to agree that there are major issues with the world that are leading to its destruction, but they see two different roots of the problem. On one hand, the Hunger Games attacks the more wealthy population and large government and on the other, while Divergent does put some blame on the government, it mostly blames human error and flawed personalities. Although the people these books were intended for may not understand all of the hidden meanings, the general ideas will still stick in their heads and they will eventually understand it and what these stories are accusing the human race of doing wrong.
In the Hunger Games, Collins is clearly pointing out that the main problems of society is government, specifically big government. The Hunger Games takes place in a republic far in the future called Panem which is comprised of thirteen districts and a Capitol. The center of the government resides in the Capitol and they control everything that goes on in the districts.
