The House of the Scorpion Nancy Farmer’s The House of the Scorpion focuses on Matteo, a clone of El Patron who seeks to extend his life by any means. Matteo is an innocent version of El Patron before he was consumed by greed. Even though, Matteo is El Patron he starts developing more kind and generous feelings. The way that Matteo is, it’s because of the influences in his life. Tam Lin and Celia are a big influence in Matt’s life, they are like his mother and father. By the end of the story, Matt is now the ruler of Opium. With the influence in his life Matt would rule Opium differently. Tam Lin and Celia guided Matteo on a noble path so he did not become evil and selfish like El Patron. Tam Lin, Matt’s mentor and guardian guided Matteo to be a better person. Tam Lin past was very tragic, he’s a terrorist who killed children accidentally. Tam Lin’s past makes him want to be a better person and he takes care of Matt and teaches him good morals. Tam Lin plays the biggest role in Matt’s growth. He teaches Matt how to be self-sufficient and strong, and puts Matt on the path to sorting out who he is and who he wanted to be. Tam Lin was a very loyal friend and protector of Matt. “Dear Matt, it said. Im a lousy writer so this wont be long. El Patron says I have to go with him. I cant do anything about it. I put supplies in this chest plus books. Yu never know when you mite need things. Yor frend Tam Lin.” (Farmer, 149). Tam Lin was preparing Matt because he knows what was coming to. Tam Lin always looks up for Matt. Even though Tam Lin was very hard and strict with Matt he teaches him to be a good person. Matt knows how much Tam Lin loved him, because of the way he treated him. Tam Lin knows El Patron very well and he started noticing how Matt was different from El Patron. Tam Lin guided Matteo to be a better person teaching him respect and morals so he didn’t become
