Scientology From Tom Cruise’s wedding to South Park’s cartoon cynicism, the Church of Scientology has emerged through the media as one of the wealthiest, most powerful but also the most controversial new religious organizations of the last 50 years. The word Scientology is derived from the Latin word scio, meaning "know" and the Greek word logos "the word or outward form by which the inward thought is expressed and made known." Therefore, Scientology means knowing about knowing. In Scientology, God is the highest of the eight dynamics, which the individual strives to embrace and to know fully. Ron Hubbard’s book entitled, “Scientology: A new Slant on Life,” Actor John Travolta, Producer Terry Jastrow, Musician Chick Corea, and Former NFL player Bob Adams each endorse and highly recommend his book. Each one of these well known people have very high paying salaries, which enables them to use their wealth to advance in the higher stages of Scientology, which consequently costs them more as the level they wish to achieve heightens. The reference to higher stages means that as an individual moves up the Bridge, he moves progressively up through increasingly higher stages of awareness, a rising improvement, with each advance built upon the one before. Unfortunately, this stage building which requires money could put middle class Scientologists at an extreme disadvantage, possibly forcing them to work for the church to gain access to free sessions so they can climb stages to reach the top. According to an article written in Rolling Stone (2006), “Auditing is purchased in 12.5 hour blocks, known as "intensives." Each intensive can cost anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 and $9,000 for advanced sessions” (60). The Rolling Stone article leads one to believe that Scientology claims its form of therapy is scientific and the truth will only be revealed to those who have the money to purchase advancement to levels. The most likely factor this can be linked to is the tendency for celebrities to express their interest in this religion. According to the Official Scientology website the study of scientology is quite expensive and if you wish to progress to a higher level you must pay even more. The religion Scientology could be easily perceived as an act of consumerism. Technically this is more truth than opinion considering it is being sold to consumers. With the media’s attention to the fact that very powerful, prominent celebrities believe in such a controversial religion it can lead one to wonder if this is just a publicity stunt, or consumerism at it’s finest. One will find that Scientology is a religion that has been the center of controversy through the media and the celebrities that are linked to the
