The first to arrive to Hawaii, of the Hernandez family, was Lilian Hernandez. She is the first generation. Lilian Hernandez was born and raised on the islands of the Philippines. She grew up there, up until the age of 18. Her younger sister, Edith, was a mail order bride. A mail order bride is someone who writes letters to a potential love interest, an American citizen who will bring you to America. Edith fell in love with her pen pal, John Bebe. John lived in the Big Island, Hawaii. Soon after John and Edith were married in the Philippines. Edith later moved to Hawaii with her newlywed husband. My mother, Lilian, wanted to move to America as well, so she initiated the first letter, to a man named Gary Brown. He soon became her pen pal and the man she would marry, to bring her to America. Lilian had always been very close to her family in the Philippines, so moving to America, was a big step. Lilian chose to talk to Gary Brown, because of his location. Gary Brown lived in the state of Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. This was not so far from the Big Island, where sister Edith lived. Moving to an island by her sister, reassured and comforted Lilian. Before Lilian Hernandez ever came to Hawaii, she already envisioned what Hawaii would be like. She pictured Hawaii to be like Heaven on Earth. A place where she could go to and relax. Her expectations were quite high of these islands. But what influenced her thoughts the most, was a tv show she grew up watching. This tv show was Hawaii Five 0. Hawaii Five 0 was a popular tv show in the Philippines. It created a pretty good image of Hawaii to everyone who watched it. This show consisted of beautiful people, beautiful scenery, positive attitudes and an overall wonderful place. Since Hawaii was one of the states of America, she also expected freedom.
