Gatsby is more in love with the thought of being with Daisy, than he is actually in love with her. Throughout the scene where Gatsby recalls his first visit to Daisy’s house he says, “There was a ripe mystery about it, a hint of bedrooms upstairs more beautiful and cool than other bedrooms, of gay and radiant activities taking place through its corridors...”(155) Gatsby seems to be fascinated with almost everything around him except Daisy herself. He goes in depth about the house, although he has not even entered yet. Gatsby is intrigued with the mystery of the inside of the house, and he imagines just how garnished and abundant with rooms it must be. Most people when discussing their love and desire for someone
He then offers a chance to make some money with Gatsby by working with Wolfshiem, who we find out is a shady figure, but this offer offends Nick. The day Gatsby and daisy are to meet it rains and Gatsby gets terribly nervous. At the beginning of the meeting it is terribly awkward. Then Nick goes to make some tea and leaves the two alone to come back to see them both so happy and daisy to the point of tears. The romance seems to be totally back and realizing that they no longer know Nick is there he leaves them be.
In this short story a husband and wife are out for dinner to celebrate the husband’s birthday. The wife had planned a little surprise for him and in the end the husband ended up embarrassed and causing his wife to cry. This story shows how communion over a meal can go very wrong. This couple is supposed to be out for a nice dinner to celebrate a special day together in communion, but it turns out horribly wrong. Communion “constitutes a shared experience (Foster 9).” The wife was so excited to share this experience of a surprise with her husband, but all that he was worried about was how embarrassed he was.
The reader’s interpretation of these characters is how Nick sees them and describes them, which is why his protagonist role is very important in the way in which the story is told throughout the novel. Also from Nick’s narrative, in chapter 1we see that unlike Nick, Tom is very arrogant and dishonest at the dinner party, advancing racist comments, and also having public affairs. We get the impression that Daisy is very emotional and tries to appear “shallow” as she says that she hopes her baby daughter will be fool, because “that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful fool.” This is said because of the unattractive reality in the East Egg that Daisy’s husband, Tom Buchanan, is having an affair. In the final part of chapter 1, as Nick arrives home from the dinner party he sees Gatsby for the first time, reaching out at a distant green light at the end of a dock. At this moment in the story, Nick does not know the significance of this green light and what it represents, which gives Nick another reason to be intrigued by Gatsby, as well as his source of
He lives in a splendid and gorgeous house. “…it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden. It was Gatsby's mansion” (10). As what Nick describes, Gatsby’s house is nothing more than an immaculate symbol of his incalculable income. Gatsby uses the house in an attempt to win happiness and respect from his neighbors.
Taylor McCoy Great Gatsby Writing Assignment English III 1/23/09 The home is often based off our financial status and usually shows our lifestyle and personality. The home shows many people these things about us and this factor is true to anyone who allows people into their home. In our case though the homes of three men by the names of Gatsby, Tom and Nick are vividly portrayed in the book "The Great Gatsby", and are given detailed personalities based off their house and social position. However their houses also show their somewhat questionable lifestyle that many see as either strange or reckless. We start off with Gatsby who at first is given next to no description but later is described as a very wealthy man who inherited
Over the first year she developed a good working relationship with one of the audit partners, R.J. Bell. He was known in the office for being receptive to the new staff accountants and would often invite them to his house for dinner and even went as far as to help her obtain a car loan. After her first year with the firm, Bell began to call her at home for non-business related reasons and even showed up on her morning run a few times to ask her out for a drink. This made Sarah uncomfortable and she always found a reason to excuse herself out of the activity. His calls became more frequent and persistent and she agreed to a drink a few times in hopes that it would help smooth over what she felt had become a stressful relationship, but it only served to exacerbate things further, with Bell showing up at her apartment twice unannounced.
With all the power he holds he could pretty much do whatever his heart desires, but his heart is stuck to only one thing and that is the love for the woman Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby has not forgotten his love for Daisy and does whatever it takes to make things work. Now that he is such a wealthy man Daisy cannot say, “Rich girls don't marry poor boys”. When Gatsby and Daisy reunite they greet each other as if nothing has changed and Daisy ignores the fact that she is married to Tom. Gatsby does everything to gain Daisy’s attention, this is the reason Gatsby throws such marvelous parties, to try and grasp her attention.
Possibly even love her, but she’s so out of my league and will never like me back.” “Any girl would be lucky to have you.” I spoke slightly jealous. “Really?” Zac asked softly. “You are amazing Zac.” “The thing is this girl is just absolutely amazing too. She has everything I look for in a girl and more. She’s the most beautiful girl I have ever managed to lay my eyes on.
One more occurence of Nick paying more attention to the busy world going around him than himself arises in seven. Nick, Jordan, Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby all went to New York City Tom and Gatsby start to get in an argument after Tom is sure that there is something going on between his wife Daisy and Gatsby, after this as Tom, Jordan, and Nick are about to leave Tom asks if Nick or Jordan would like some whisky to which Nick replies, “ No … I just remembered that today’s my birthday.” (Fitzgerald 135).
