A Letter to the Editor It is Walter Cuffey's opinion that providing free housing and healthcare naturally would diminish people's desire to work for the government and pay their taxes, which in the long run would lead the country to bankruptcy. This contradicts Congressman Jesse Jackson Junior's opinion who believes it simply would create millions of jobs in the housing and health care industries and because of that generate a greater economic prosperity. I do not believe that the free housing Jackson mentions is meant to be expensive and luxurious. Health care organizations may be struggling to meet operational margins because the industry has never treated its customers like other retail- oriented sectors of the economy. Hospitals incur sixty billion dollars in bad debt annually because the typically collect only ten to twenty percent of a total uninsured patient balance after service. This is due to a number of reasons, including poor accounting practices, or a lack of patient information.
Governments are actually getting involved in preventing health problems. Another reason why governments should get involved in what these companies are serving is because it’s costing the country money when the government has to pay for citizen’s medicine. Due to the current state of the economy, most countries are trying to help people choose healthy foods so that in the future it will not affect the government money in trying to cover its citizen’s medical bills. So far the government in the United States has banned items that contain high amounts of trans-fat in schools from kindergarten up to the 12th grade (U.S. Department of Health, 2012).Having the government involved in children’s food at a young age is very beneficial because studies show that kids who eat better are more focused on their work (Smith, 2012). AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE The Healthcare Industry is a 2.8 trillion dollar industry. From issues like personal bank-ruptcy, overpaid executives in the healthcare industry, inconsistent pricing from health care pro-viders and hospitals and patients not able to afford to have health care, there was a need for health care reform. Due to several inefficiencies that drove up the cost of healthcare, a reduced standard of care to patients, and Americans that could not afford to have health care, the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010. Some of the key goals of the ACA were to reduce the rate of health care spending and the burden it placed on families, businesses, employers and state and federal budgets as well as improving the quality of care provided to patients. One of the provisions in the ACA is that all Americans are required to have health insurance.
America does not treat everybody equal, healthcare is not handled in the right manner, and how is it fair for the poverty families have to pay more in taxes than those of the wealthy families? It just doesn’t add up. Well at least, I cannot make sense of it. Can you? America, “home of equal opportunities…” or so we thought.

First, through their taxes, poor families subsidize rich students who can easily afford to pay fees. A second point is that spending government money on free education is often not possible or desirable when a country needs hospitals, roads, and primary or secondary schools. Furthermore, when people get something free, they often do not value it. If college is free, many students will go there just because they cannot think of anything else to do. There are certain families who cannot afford to pay for the education of their children.
When an employee is bombarded with too many patients under their care, it causes stress to the employee, and as an effect they lose concern for the patient. Many geriatric care facilities are under staffed, and the pay rate is very low compared to other health care professions. Nurse’s aides have a very high job turnover rate which leads to lack of bonding with their patient, and the patient receiving a new caregiver every few months, which will cause confusion to both the patient and the employee. Inadequate staffing is a huge factor and problem in nursing homes. According to the U.S. House of Representatives, majority of nursing homes do not have enough staff to meet the levels recommended by federal officials; the levels recommended are 3.45 nursing hours per patient daily.

It just doesn’t feel right to these citizens that basic healthcare is outside of their reach just because they have lost their job or chose a career path that was not as profitable as some others may have chosen. After all, every job must be done and not everyone can be among the elite. However, that should not mean that the people who do the lower class jobs should suffer medically.
