The Gods and Goddesses in Ancient Egypt The ancient Egyptians believed in many different gods and goddesses. Each one with its own role to play in maintaining peace and harmony across the land. Some gods and goddesses took part in creation, some brought the flood every year, some offered protection, and some took care of people after they died. Others were either local gods who represented towns, or minor gods who represented plants or animals. The ancient Egyptians believed that it was important to recognize and worship these gods and goddesses so that life continued smoothly. Some gods and goddesses had animal heads because they were identified with particular animals. There was often a connection between the god or goddess and the actions of the animal. History of the gods: The Egyptians believed that in the beginning, the universe was filled with the dark waters of chaos. The first god, Atum, came from the water. Atum spat and this created the gods Shu and Tefnut .The world was created when Shu and Tefnut gave birth to two children: Nut and Geb. Nut and Geb had sexual relationships. Shu said that the pregnant Nut could not give birth. Nut begged Thoth to help. Thoth gambled with the god Khonsu. Nut then gave birth to Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys. Osiris was the king of Egypt. His brother, Seth, murdered him and became the king. After Seth became king, he was fought by Horus, Osiris's son. Seth lost and was sent to the desert. Seth became the god of very bad storms. Osiris was mummified by Anubis and became God of the dead and Horus became the new king. Obelisks: The obelisk symbolized the sun god Ra. Nefertiti: Nefertiti was a symbol of great beauty.Her name means the beautiful one has come. She and the great king, Akhenaten,were known for trying to introduce a monotheistic religion and abandoning the worship of many gods and worshipping
