The Go-Between The Go-Between is a short story written by Ali Smith. The short story was written in 2009 for a collection of short stories written to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the United Nations’ adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The short story gives an insights view of how it is to be an African refugee between the border of Morocco and Spain. The narrator of the short story is a former microbiologist from Cameroon. He tried to emigrate from his country, but unfortunately without any luck, and now he is a go-between (guide), who helps refugees, who seek a better life in Europe, to immigrate to Europe. He works from the Spanish city in Morocco, where he makes contact between the emigrates and the international doctors. The narrator has previously tried to immigrate to Europe, but without any luck, each time he the authorities sent him back. At his first try, his second ladder breaks and he gets caught in the middle of nowhere, between the two fences, which separate Europe, and Africa. He lives in no man’s land in six weeks, before the police sent him back to Africa. His second try, he is during it with 500 hundred others refugees. Under the second try he looses a part of his ear, but again with out any luck because he gets caught and the police sent him back to Africa again. The third and fourth try is again without any luck and the he looses his finger. The style of writing is central to the short story, because it illustrates how the author conveys his message of the story. The style of writing is used to create certain feelings and thoughts to the reader. Ali Smith writes very short sentences that make the reading experience very fragmented, but also intense. Smith writes about some very serious issues, refugees who are being chased and shot by the police, children being beaten and women who are being raped, etc.,
