Nowadays it is so important whether you are upper class, middle class or lower class, because it plays such a huge role in the English society. The problem is that people are judged by their social backgrounds and that leads to a strong influence on how and whom you interact with. It is a problem because it affects people – they simply forget to stay true to themselves and be whom they are. The story depicts the role social classes and that is what the main character, narrator, experiences. Klaus is born and brought up in Germany, but after his fathers dead his mother marries an Englishman and they move to England. He belongs to the low social class; he looks different and talks different and that is the reason why the others at school pick on him. Klaus is tall and has fair hair and pale skin. He feels lonely und unloved and finds it hard to communicate with other people. He wants to be accepted for who he is and does not want to accept the reality and that is why he answers the teacher in German “Zwei Minuten” instead of “two minutes”. He is not afraid of being German or in the low social class. Klaus does not want to change himself because of some people, but he is very affected by them. The picking has an adversely effect on him. The lady in the beginning of the story reminds the narrator of Klaus. She is a stranger, but still she looks desolate and utterly unloved just like Klaus. She is probably the reason why the main character looks back on his past. There may be a connection between the lady and the narrator since he compares her to Klaus. The narrator lives in the City of London, where the centre of the world’s business and financial locates. That indicates to a tough social environment where money and status plays a huge
