The Four Essential Functions of Management MGT/330 Management: Theory, Practice, and Applications The Four Essential Functions of Management The cultures of organizations are greatly influenced by the performance of managers and their abilities to reinforce strong organizational cultures. Good managers are able to maintain successful organizational cultures and/or to assist employees in the building of strong organizational cultures in the case of weakness (Locker-Kierzler 374). However, a manager’s profession is not simple. The workdays of managers are normally filled with an array of duties and responsibilities that they often have to perform concurrently. By the same token, their routines will frequently be interrupted by meetings, conflicts, and unexpected situations, which will lead to not being able to carry on with all planned activities. The activities, duties, and responsibilities of managers include four essential management functions—planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Whereas some managers might focus or devote themselves to one or two of these functions in a more vehement manner than they might devote themselves to the others, in order to be efficient managers, they will still have to dedicate sufficient attention to each one of the four management functions. Successful managers do not neglect any of their functions as they understand they cannot proficiently fulfill one function without fulfilling the rest. Ultimately, planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the fundamental functions of management, and they all ought to be assigned equal attention and importance and be are carried out (Bateman-Snell 22) both effectively and efficiently (Bateman-Snell 19).
