The Problems of the Food Industry Zach Reinhardt Honors Health, Mrs. Kost October 24th, 2012 In modern times, our food industry has a ton of problems. The book Chew on This, by Eric Schlosser and the movie Food Inc., by Robert Kenner proves that our food industry indeed does have a problem. Everything from the harassment of farmers to the cramped spaces in the chicken coop is because of our need to capitalize on food. Both the book and the movie shows just how big of an impact the food industry had on our society. The main difference between the book and the movie is that the movie spent more time talking about how the food industry affects modern-day society. Although the book did cover some aspects of that topic, it wasn’t as detailed as the movie. The movie interviewed farmers, store owners, etc., to find out how they really felt about the giant food corporations. However, I felt that the book and the movie also had a lot in common. I feel they both followed the same plot line; there were many times I thought the movie was based off of the book. Nowadays, the food industry almost controls the House of Representatives. In the movie, they talked about how the Cheeseburger Bill was passed by the House of Representatives and how it would stop future “frivolous” lawsuits against food corporations. This shows how much influence the food industry has on the government. Maybe they even bribe some politicians into being on their side. The Bush administration also didn’t help the situation at all. They strongly supported the food industry and their motives, and helped boost their overall influence on our society. During my research, I found that the giant food corporations, such as Tyson, did indeed crush smaller competition.
