Christopher J Denton March 18, 2012 Criminology 8 Tue,Thurs 08:00am S/N: 0317445 THE FBI’S NATIONAL JOINT TERRORISM TASK FORCE (NJTTF) ABSTRACT This research paper will briefly outline the formation, history of, function and capabilities of the Federal Bureau of Investigations elite Joint Terrorism Task Force. It will inform the reader of the elemental unifying effect of the Joint Terrorism Task Force and exemplify its purpose as an intelligence gathering and direct action entity. Furthermore it will illustrate some of the Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) utilized by the Joint Terrorism Task Force to gather intelligence on terrorists or potential terrorist activities and the methods used, both operationally and tactically for the surveilling, tracking and apprehension of suspected terrorists. The FBI’s National Joint Terrorism Task Force is a subunit of the Federal Bureau of Investigations. The first Joint Terrorism Task Force was formed in New York City in early 1980. This Joint Terrorism Task Force was compiled of ten FBI Special Agents and ten Detectives from the New York City police department. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is not a singular unit in and of itself, but a compilation of agencies working together to provide intelligence, investigative and direct action assets. In the years predating September 11, 2001 there were only about 35 Joint Terrorism Task Forces stationed at various locations scattered around the continental United States. After the devastating September 11, 2001 attacks against the world trade center and Pentagon FBI director Robert S. Muller III, mandated that Joint Terrorist Task Forces be permanently established at all FBI field offices. There are currently more than 100 Joint Terrorism Task Forces operating globally as well as within the United States, the exception being the city of Portland
