‘The extent to which participant observation studies produce data that is high in validity has been exaggerated.’ Explain and assess this view. Participant observation is a method used by sociologists as a means for gathering data. Participant observation involves sociologists to be part of the subjects being observed. It can be divided into two; overt participant observation, where the fact that the observers declare their true identity and purpose, and covert participant observation where the fact that the observer is doing research doing the research is not revealed. Participant observation studies may be high in validity because the researcher gains first hand data from those being studied as well as the study involves the natural environment of the subject. Participant observation is when the researcher joins in everyday life of group and observe their way of life. The positivists believe that participant observation studies produce data in high in validity has been exaggerated as it is too subjective because the data comes from a single individual, at a specific time and place only. Inaccuracy of the data might also occur when it is impossible for covert observer to take notes while doing the research for their own safety reasons. When this happens , some researchers had to wait for the suitable time to be able to write down their studies, which relies highly on their memory. For example, Ken Pryce had to wait until he got home in order to be being able to write his observation in his study of West Indian life in Briston. An evident that able to support this is when Cicourel confessed that his participant observation studies rely heavily on his interpretation and observation skills.
