iv) His interest in electronic equipments and vehicles limit his conversion, like routes and model of buses and MTR in Hong Kong – it made his classmates and teachers in primary school had a poor impression of him, thought he is stubborn, annoying impolite, troublesome and uncooperative; but he does not learn from it; and keeps doing this to his ‘new friends’ in the secondary school. After holding the first IEP meeting, it is agreed that
By reading the principal’s speech, Richard was saying what the white power wanted him to say and to Richard this would be giving in to the very thing he hated so much. Richard was willing to leave school without a diploma instead of this. White people alienated Richard from his environment because he did not accept the way of life that other black people did. Richard’s relatives never understood Richard and because of this he was alienated from his family and his own people. Shorty is the young black boy who gets beat by the white people and jokes about it.
The lines “We think…we wish…we forget…then, we arrive…we turn away…we look [for a connection to what is now lost]…we miss” show how mislead ideas can cause people to yearn for what they think will bring satisfaction. What they once had somehow gets lost in translation and they find themselves regretfully yearning not for what could be but for what was. The author uses the Middle Eastern immigrants’ story to outline the all too familiar sequence of emotions that come with unfulfilled expectations. This combination of repetition and allegory make this poem accessible to many different people. It transcends the surface story to touch on a basic human
When we make good choices, we have more professional opportunities to choose from. If we make bad choices, than we have not as many choices to choose from. This can relate to the character Holden Caufield in the book The Catcher in the Rye. In the story, Holden makes some very poor academic choices. Holden says it himself that he has no idea what he wants to become and eventually is kicked out of his school because of these bad choices.
Dropout rates and other violent crimes may contribute from continuous suspension and expulsion. “Just imagine if a student just committed a crime for example, doing graffiti on the lockers. Then the student is sent to the principal tells the student that their suspended. The student will now feel very sad and happy at the same time because they just got suspended. This can ruin his life and at the same time, the students could dropout from school and do whatever they like.”(Dale) When students get expelled from schools, there would be no hope for them and they would no longer care about their education and their future goals.
People in America (and teens from all over), usually the ones who have no right to, whine about how horrible their life is when some insignificant problem comes up. They won’t be allowed to go to a party or they have to redo a simple chore due to the lack of effort put into it the first time around. I admit, I too am occasionally guilty of this. But, let’s consider this. Does our life truly suck?
Ashley Professor R English100 3 September 2012 Comparisons on the Declining School System Have you ever thought school was boring and your teachers looked like they did not want to be there? In Ken Robinson’s video, he draws and explains the public education system and why it is not working for America today. Throughout the video he makes points that relate to Michael Moore’s excerpt “Idiot Nation”. Both men think that the school system is suppressing the students and is outdated for our nation and teachers do not have adequate supplies to teach. They want a change in the education system so that children can prosper and be able to boost our declining economy.
Analyzing “Introduction to Poetry” “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins is a poem that seeks to teach a reader to listen to a poem for all its beauty and not to tear it apart. Poetry is a beautiful form of art that is not always easily understood by most concrete thinkers. Like a painting with different textures and colors and details, poetry is an expression of art that is set to a rhythm. It is created to illicit memories or feelings or images that not all people share. In the first stanza Collins writes: I ask them to take a poem and hold it up to the light like a color slide Here we see that his poem is written in first person about them (being the student) and what he wants them to do with a poem.
Literary Movement 3 Confessional Poetry In the 1950s to 1960s came a scandalise movement known as Confessional Poetry or personal poetry. In its day this type of poetry was considered terrible, in highlighting themes such as suicide, sexuality, mental illness, feminism and lot more controversial topics. Although talking about yourself, your experiences and emotions personally was nothing new in poetry, since we see first person used in poetry in many of Shakespeare’s sonnets, the problem society had with Personal Poetry was its nature of being inappropriate, especially in such a conservative period of time. Even today reading Confessional Poetry can be quite uncomfortable, because of the techniques that the poets use. The poems are written in first person, using a lot of imagery.
