The governing authorities again like to use culturally significant figures in the tales of innovation and invention and discovery. Even with such advanced politics and thought, a class distinction still persisted, and though they had seen the benefit of all this technology, there were those in the upper class who felt it was beneath them to use such tools in any way. T Innovation was of great value to both the Han and Romans. The Han placed a higher attribution to culturally relevant creators. For example, Huan Tan, an upper-class Han philosopher wrote in New Discourses (Document III) of an emperor of myth inventing and refining the pestle and mortar for all people.
The military strength and wealth he gained through his conquests in Gaul would pave his way to a successful career. He was so successful in his campaign that he became famous for his phrase “I came, I saw, I conquered” and the modern historian H.H Scullard even describes him as a man with “outstanding abilities”. Thus the Gallic Wars played a significant role in Julius Caesar’s Career, both politically and militarily. Caesar’s reputation as a General, who is considered to be more prominent than Pompey the great, was not comprehended until the Gallic Wars. Instead he was known to be one of the ablest orators and “most adroit politicians of the day”[F.B Marsh] and his military skills were most likely not rated very highly.
Roman Architecture The creative and efficient design of roman architecture has influenced the features and theory behind many of our most admirable structures today. The Roman’s carry many successful buildings to their name as they greatly influenced the time in which they were introduced. Some of the Roman’s most recognized and appreciated innovations were the aqueduct, the roads, the dome and the invention of concrete. There are many reasons as to why the Roman building was so accepted, mostly because of their unique yet successful ideas and reliable materials. To start the Roman’s were a very advanced society.
They are most famous for their architecture, based on the new ideas and materials that they established. The Romans learned concepts from prior ages and altered them with the aim of building up their Empire and creating a stronger basis for living. Through mastering skills of architecture and engineering, the Romans were able to change the face of Europe forever. They learned not only to master ways of creating solid structures but also ways of giving them character and style. Roman architecture did not simply appear out of thin air; it has its roots in Grecian and Etruscan architecture.
Throughout many centuries of dominance, the auspicious Roman Empire accomplished great achievements. These achievements both on, and off the battlefield required the dedication and faith of the whole Roman society to the Emperors. Acquiring such commitment was completed through the notion of numen. Numen is defined as a spirit believed to inhabit an object or preside over a place. The idea of numen enabled the Emperors to maintain their power over the public.

This would not be possible without the use of technology. In order to talk about roman technology and engineering we must first understand what technology is. Technology is “the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science (technology, n.d.).” The Pantheon is a great example of Roman architecture. Most historians believe Emperor Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa built the first Pantheon in 27BC, though no one knows its exact age.

Because of the militaristic skill that he showed, Nerva chose him to be his successor on the Imperial throne. Trajan was praised in his time by the Romans because he built roads and aqueducts. Trajan’s forum was an elaborate one and was made of polished marble, bronze and gold. The two main elements of the new Forum of Trajan were that it had an open piazza as well as a basilica, both of which were very large.

The Aeneid and Aeneas were an influence over Rome for many reasons, one of the most important is that it offered Romans a story/tale in which the people could believe in and look up to. Virgil mentions many gods who often commanded the Roman’s ancestors, the Trojans, and serves as a great story as to how Rome came to be and what Rome would be like. (pg.154) One of the most profound leaders under Julius Caesar, Marcus Cicero a philosopher who oppossed tyranny and political corruption. (pg.154) Cicero believed that monarchy, aristocracy and Democracy were the three principles of construction to a good government. (pg.155) Rome was more based on a legeslative attack, romans in the old days are more recollected for having great knowledge of the world we live in today. One of the most influential people in Rome was Marcus Cicero, a great philopsoper as we say and exam most of his work today we see a story of a honored and respected man as well as loyal, but his loyalty would prove to be his greatest downfall and which would lead to his exicution.
Both of these types were favorites within Greek architecture (Sayre). The Corinthian was a favorite among Roman architecture. It was considered even more decorative than the Ionic styles used by the Greeks. Another similarity they share is their wiliness to dominate the site of the architecture. The Greeks believed that intellect is superior to forces of nature, while the Romans wanted their architecture to dominate the sites.
