The European Union is a group of countries whose governments work together, to join you have to agree to follow the rules and in return you get certain benefits. Each country has to pay money to be in the EU, they mostly do this through taxes. The EU uses the money to change the way people do business in Europe. Countries join because they think that they will benefit from the changes the EU makes. It was created in numeral steps, the process started in the late 50’s, early 60’s. The European Union of today was formed in 1992. The European Union was created to achieve the political goal of peace, ensure people can live in safety, to overcome divisions of the continents, preserve the diversity of the people in EU ect. In the beginning (1957) there were 6 founding members which were; France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium. Currently there are 27 countries in the EU which include; Ireland, Denmark, Britain, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Austria, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium. Today the EU mission is to Provide peace, prosperity and stability for its people, overcome the divisions on the continent, ensure that it’s people can live in safety, promote balanced economic and social development, meet the challenges of globalisation and preserver the diversity of the people of Europe, uphold the values that Europeans share, such as sustainable development and a sound environment, respect for human rights and the social market economy. The euro is a type of currency and the official currency of the euro zone (countries in the EU that use the euro). The euro was introduced in 2002.
