It represents a huge part of the mass media in American culture and is a form of entertainment that can also exercise the mind, reflexes, logic, and interpretive skills (Rivaux 1).Each year the industry makes billions of dollars, which surpasses the income that movies or DVD’s can bring in a year. The influence of video games has been so great on modern American culture, which includes having an effect on television shows and Hollywood movies. More films are getting produced based off of highly popular games like Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Super Mario Bros., etc. (Rivaux 2). There are many different varieties of games that appeal to a certain player. The most popular systems in today’s society are PS3, Xbox, or Nintendo Wii all producing a colossal amount of games to choose from. Majority of gamers in America want to play the games that have the most realistic attributes. The realism that is put into these games might include: strong sexual scenes, strong violence, and many drug references throughout the gameplay experience. These people play these games for the same reason they watch television; to escape the reality of their own world. The biggest controversy and argument held in the video game industry is: Does it have a good or bad effect on people in society? A Case of Violence: One case of a violent act was blamed by a teenager’s father on the famous video game series, “Grand Theft Auto.” In 2003, told Devin Thompson purchased the mature rated game, under the age of eighteen (Fox News Associated Press 1).
