Running head: THE EFFECTS OF POPULATION DENSITY AND NOISE The Effects of Population Density and Noise University of Phoenix PSY/460 Sep 19, 2011 The Effects of Population Density and Noise The world is becoming a more densely populated region that is continuing to grow. The population has been increasing at alarming rates due to declining death rates but not declining birth rates (Holt, 1999). Population density can lead to problems with the environment and also mental and emotional problems within individuals. Population density according to Straub (2007) is “A measure of crowding based on the total number of people living in an area of limited size” (p.107). Noise is also another issue that occurs with the increase in population and this can have negative impacts on a person as well. Territoriality issues arise with more densely populated areas and it is not uncommon for people to become very protective over their belongings and families. The following paper will describe the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space and how these concepts have become increasingly important as populations become denser. The paper will also discuss the effect that nature has on individuals living in urban environments. The concept of noise and the effect that it has on individuals will be discussed in the paper along with two strategies that can be used to reduce noise in the living environment. The first item to be discussed is the concept of territoriality, privacy, and personal space and how these concepts have become more important as density in the population continues to grow.
