This article is based upon different type of fallacies Beres uses to tell his audience that the Common Application process is a waste of many, and doesn’t give the students what they deserve. He uses Appeal to Ignorance when he talks about how those who have a high SAT score and “mommy and daddy credit card isn’t maxed out”. So what if their parents are working hard for this kids? Appeal to Popular Opinion by saying “kids are taking spots at universities that they may, in fact, have little to no interest in.” How can afford to go to a university that will cost at least 30K to graduate just because they don’t like it? He mentions that’s X amount of Y students got accepted into a particular college, but doesn’t talk about how many percentage of Y actually meet the requirements of their “dream”
Also, by the words “real cool” this shows how arrogant the young men are, it even points out how the individuals themselves place themselves higher than others. Further, when examining the poem, line two reveals that the individuals do not like school. To illustrate in the poem the individuals relate that “We left school” this shows that the gang could care less about their education; they are not responsive of the meaning of education which will quickly become their devastation. In Alison Schneider’s essay, “Frumpy or Chic? Tweed or Kente” Sometimes Clothes Make the Professor” Camille Paglia says, “Yes, teaching is a performance art. But when the teacher hijacks the classroom for self-display – of fashion or mannerism or cult of personality – we have a corruption of education (143).” Some believe that their professors should use the classroom for self-display. People want their professors to look professional and clean-cut, and of course personality is important as well because without a personality, the professor is just plain boring. Without a sports jacket and dress pants professors look trashy and can’t be taken seriously.
Living by myself, I realized the difficulty of waking up at your own will and the importance of analyzing the time it will take to get to each class. It also made me realize that I cannot get ready at the last minute and arrive to class exactly when it starts. One of the disadvantages of being at a small college is that the teachers are well aware of when you arrive late to class and often embarrass you for doing so. As stated earlier, I am a very shy person and by being called out in front of the whole class, made me realize that you cannot take time for granted. An encounter in where I realized the importance of time management was when I went to bed late on a school night and missed a whole class and lab.
High school dropouts have fewer opportunities in life because of their lack of education. While we are occupied on our potential threat being the gun in the class room, we miss the opportunity to learn what our teacher had planned for the day. Missing enough of the lectures leads to low test scores and the though of dropping out. Dropouts will have fewer chances at being accepted into college universities. Universities favor grade point averages, high standardized test scores, advanced placement courses, and any other reflection of above average education.
Students left class feeling discouraged to keep on learning the language. David was all about speaking French when he first moved to Pairs, but after being put down he stray from the public. He was afraid to answer the phone, go get the paper and even going to the café intimidated him. Teachers are supposed to encourage students to learn and not give up, but this particular teacher discourages her student and left them with little motivation to learn. Learning a second language is hard enough, but to have this type of teacher makes the stress level go up.
Coming late to the circle shows he wants to do things on his own time not like the rest of the class. When he gets to the circle he pushes to sit where he wants not where he is assigned. After reading up on the Ron she finds that transitioning is difficult for him and tries other ways to help him transition. Being a new student can be stressful so students tend to act out or try to be the bully to make a name for themselves instead of trying to fit in. Including Ron in activities by asking questions instead of letting him sit their quiet is a start.
“Here comes the carnival,” they’d say. They weren’t able to keep themselves clean on their way into town because they had to go by dirt road. Being ostracized, they were shunned by society as nothings and ridiculed. They worked so hard and tried to keep up with school but would be way too tired, they fell asleep in class and would get sent home with notes about being inattentive. This wasn’t their fault.
They stress day and night over these overrated tests, like previously stated channeling out the imagination, curiosity and good will. Besides being an imprecise measure for students, they use them to judge a teacher’s performance as well, essentially used to either reward or punish them. Standardized test are not helping us very much right now. In conclusion, the usage of standardized tests should be discontinued or by the very least lessened. These tests are not helping people, it’s initially having a negative effect on students and teachers.
One reason for this is that they are worried about their future, status quo and financial success. The majority of student are desperate enough to fit and blend into society which lead them to no longer attending classes they are interested in. The devoid of passion leads to end of striving for genius, leading to many uncurious and uneducated individuals. Since the student are trying to become the ideal persons, with successful careers, they are afraid to think out of the box and become genius. He writes about the lack of passion to point out that there will no longer be any genius in the near future.
