The Effect of Social Media in Our Lives Just like any advancement in technology, social media has altered our lives. We are all aware of the power of the social media for good. It offers a wealth of information, connects people who are miles and cultures apart, and allows news to be disseminated instantly. Social networking is great for creating new social connections, meaning connecting with relatives living far away, or making new friendships on social media sites. While celebrating the good in social media we cannot help but explore the down side effect of it in our lives. While that can make for a huge discussion, I am going to represent here only some of the good and the bad effects of social media that I have noticed in people’s lives around myself. As of my own personal experience, I have experienced the good side of Internet and social media. I moved to the United States a little more than a year ago from Albania, a small country in Europe. Thanks to Facebook, I am still very close to the friends and family that I left behind. Being active on Facebook has helped me still be a part of my loved ones lives and vice versa. If it wasn’t for Facebook, I think that I would have felt so alone and detached when I first moved here being thousand miles away from everyone I knew and loved. Also, I should say that using the internet and using social networking sites to discuss school work, it has always helped me do better at school. While thinking of the pros of social media, support groups are one of the first things that come to mind. For example, take a close look at all the support groups on Facebook. Members of these groups discuss their health conditions, share important information, and resources relevant to their conditions while creating strong support networks.
