Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “Young Goodman Brown” follows a Puritan man’s nightmarish encounter with the devil, which results in the loss his faith and virtue. Flannery O’Connor’s tale “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” details how a southern grandmother is only able to discover what it truly means to be good when she is faced with imminent death. Both texts showcase the classic battle of good versus evil, and provide altering viewpoints on the possible outcomes of this faceoff. The stories by Hawthorne and O’Connor both tell the tale of what occurs when a seemingly righteous and faithful person is faced with a character of pure evil, though the stories’ starkly contrasting settings and tones build each story in a different direction. Although the themes of the stories are strikingly similar, the difference in setting helps to shape how the encounter between good and evil plays out.
Grendel adapted because of the way he was treated by society which ultimately led to his destructive behavior. He wasn’t given a chance to conform to society because he was judged. His aggression was due to jealousy and loneliness. Grendel will always be seen as a monster because he comes from that culture. A world full of monsters, hate, violence, and evil.
But as we go further we see his character change from a protagonist to an antagonist. He is described as a dirty, ragged, black haired child. From the beginning of the novel and most likely from the beginning of his life, he has suffered pain and rejection. When he is brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, he is looked upon as a thing rather than a child. Mrs. Earnshaw was ready to fling it out of doors, without having done anything to deserve rejection; Heathcliff is made to feel like an outsider after Mr. Earnshaw’s death and suffers cruel mistreatment by Hindley.
Lastly, Catherine, Heathcliff and Edgar are alienated the most in the novel, Wuthering Heights. It can be said that this alienation is what causes their deaths, and all of their sorrows. Alienation makes a character desperate, and desperation can cause one to make decisions that they regret. Bad decisions are made by Hindley and Isabella because of alienation in the novel Wuthering Heights. Hindley first feels alienation as a young boy, when his father, Mr. Earnshaw returns from Liverpool with a dark haired boy, a “gipsy brat.” Hindley dislikes Heathcliff, the orphan immediately, but his hatred for him grows as he quickly becomes Mr. Earnshaw’s favourite.
Nathaniel Hawthorn’s “Young Goodman Brown ; The Truth Revealed; Good Versus Evil” Sin is the root of all evil. It is hidden everywhere. Young Goodman Brown is a man from a good Christian family. But on his journey to the forest he sees the truth about his townspeople revealed . They show him that evil is the nature of mankind and even Christians can be evil.
Amir committed the deadly sin of being envious towards Hassan being in Amir’s life and his value towards Baba, which left him in guilt for witnessing Hassan’s struggle growing up. This all left him in unhappiness throughout his adulthood and married life as he was never able to forgive himself unless he had strived for Hassan’s forgiveness. This is what led into Sohrab’s value in Amir’s life. Therefore, throughout one’s life of sinful deeds, and wrong doings, one cannot forgive themselves unless they seek for others forgiveness and
Pride can produce the most varied effects. It has the potential to do good, but it can also be immensely destructive. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, by James Hurst, the different results of pride are a common theme seen throughout the story. Brother said that “pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death.” This statement strongly relates to the events that occurred in the story, as pride was responsible for the positive and negative feelings Brother had towards Doodle. Unfortunately, Doodle was no match for his brother’s aggressive and selfish actions.
So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them; and he sold them into the power of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. God was disappointed because he had already warned Israel of their wrong doing and they disobeyed him. So he had to revoke his promise to them. NKJV Holy Bible (Judges 2: 12&14) Now that they understood how bad they hurt God, they cried out to the Lord for deliverance…for
The short story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne describes a man’s religious transformation through the forest. The story is said to have been a dream rather than actual facts. The events that took place in the forest change Young Goodman Brown’s outlook on life permanently. He starts off as an average man with faith and ends up a pessimistic, untrusting old hag. Brown’s journey represents a darker and deeper insight into his soul.
His journey leads him to leave the village which is a place of light and security to the forest which is a place of darkness, dangerous and unknown destination. Brown's first step in the forest considers as a victory to the id over the superego. Brown's meeting with the old man who is the devil himself shows Brown's confusion; weather to believe the old man or not. The devil shocked Brown, when he told him that his father and his grandfather were a servant to the devil; he meant by that that is Brown's destiny too. Brown's believe that they are''…a race of honest men and good Christians… "has faded (Guerin, 303).
