Young Goodman Brown is changed by his spiritual journey and is enlightened by the darkness that lies in the people he trust the most. A few influences play key roles in his transformation during his journey through the forest. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story, “Young Goodman Brown”, the audience discovers a path of destruction in which the main character is dynamically changed due to his innocence, corruptibility, and faith. Innocence is easily corrupted by the gestures of the obscene. As a good Christian, Young Goodman Brown portrays innocence in his day to day life. His good demeanor keeps him in good terms with himself and everyone around him. Brown’s discovery in his journey displays how the hidden truth can change the innocence of man. Young Goodman Brown is introduced to the secret lives of his biggest role models and is profoundly disappointed. Brown finds his early mentor, Goody Cloyse, to be a witch. He also discovers Deacon Gookin and the minister to be followers of the devil. Hawthorne writes, “My faith is gone… There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Many events play a role in the dynamic change of Young Goodman Brown. His views are changed by the loss of trust in his role models. The Traveler manipulates Young Goodman Brown and makes Brown go insane. Young Goodman Brown’s innocence is corrupted by the obscene gestures he witnesses. The Traveler brought out Young Goodman Brown’s corruptibility and changed him for the worse. Faith was the only category Young Goodman Brown stayed true to.
