The Dress(2006) by Julia Darling - Analysis and interpretation The story portrays the a difficult relationship between the sisters, Rachel and Flora, but also their relationship to their mother and how they function as a family. The main issue in the story is a desirable light green silk dress, that causes a big conflict between the sisters and the mother on the mothers 40th birthday. The Mother The mother is divorced(“she called her father and asked if she could stay with him"- P11/L127) The mother just turned 40("At one end of the table was a neatly pile of used wrapping paper left over from that morning, when Flora and Rachel had sat watching their mother opening her gifts."- P8/L20) The mother works as a bereavement counsellor and lives with her two daughters("The mother was at work now, and for a moment Rachel imagined her sitting opposite a distraught client i a cream-coloured room, pushing a box of pink tissues across a coffee table. Their mother was a bereavement counsellor."- P8/L23) The mother is very noticing around her daughters, especially at the restaurant("The mother saw how Rachel hardly looked at her sister."-P9/L54), ("The mother sat between them, nibbling olives, talking incessantly, aware of the hollow silence between them."- P9/L57), (" "What's the matter?" asked the mother eventually, buttering the end of a white roll."- P9/L62) The mother handles the problem between Rachel and Flora a bit like she might do with her clients and she has some difficulties with not mixing her job with her personal life. The mother really just wants to relax and enjoy her birthday, because at work it makes her tired to deal with other people's problems and also says that she might want to change job, possibly as a jeweller. (“She wanted to turn and see what it was that Larry was doing, but felt glued to her silent daughters.”- P9/L68) She
