The drawback of Democracy in United States “The American social condition is eminently democratic”1 that is what, Tocqueville asserts in his book Democracy in America. And it was this idea of successful democracy that he brought him in America. Indeed, this French man who have seen his country failed with the democratic government, decided to examine a country were democracy were prosperous in order to the strengths but also the weaknesses of the system. At first sight, the American society was the perfect example of a society with “a high degree of equality”2, liberty and where the people reign. However, he noticed during his travel in America that the American democratic government had some dangers. In his book, Tocqueville were focus on the tyranny of the majority over minorities, the development of bad tendencies such as individualism and materialism but all those derived from a major problem which is the structure of the government that maintains liberty and equality in America. The fundamental principle of democracy is the sovereignty of the majority and that what Tocqueville states by saying in the beginning of the chapter seven that “The absolute sovereignty of the majority is the essence of democratic government, in democracy, nothing outside the majority is capable of mounting resistance to it”3. According to that statement, there is only one way to run the society and all decisions have to be on the will of the majority. But this led to despotism. Indeed the government that will follow the majority will disregard the opinions of the minorities. This is also an infringement of the freedom of thought which is included in democratic system. Moreover, this kind of tyranny is contradictory to the notion of equality because it made one opinion (the majority opinion) greater than another one (the minority’s opinion).
