The ‘Divine’ Justice “On the east of the Indus River, was a land called Bharat. A land filled with miracles and mysteries along with innumerable Gods and Goddesses. The mother goddess is the principle deity of a number of communities and revered greatly.” Parivita had read various books describing the history and greatness of her country. Her face gleamed with pride and a sense of belonging every time she thought about her country and its rich heritage. She was standing on the cliff of adolescence; about to become a fine-looking woman within a long whiff. She had the innocence of a bird flying into the horizon of the setting sun. Her parents considered themselves fortunate to be blessed with a beautiful and virtuous daughter. They were righteous, God-fearing Hindus who believed that they had instilled the faith very deeply in their daughter. Her mother was a woman who believed that it was necessary to be grounded to one’s roots just like it was necessary for a bird to come back to its nest after sunset. Every year she would take Parivita to a holy shrine so that her daughter could be blessed with a good education and a loving husband. That oblivious year, when she was twelve years and nine months old, they went to pay homage to the goddess Sati in the renowned Jwala temples situated in a town lying west of the sacred Ganges River. According to the myth, when Sati married Lord Shiva her parents did not approve of their marriage. When Daksha, the son of Brahma organised a Yajna inviting all the Gods and Goddesses, he failed to invite his daughter and her husband. Shiva sensed this and tried to persuade Sati to not go against her father’s wishes and disrupt the Yajna when they were not invited. Her rage knew no bounds and legend has it that the Goddess immolated herself after confronting her parents. Her name ‘Sati’ meaning ‘true’ and ‘honourable’ invokes a great
