The tourism industry is a unique industry compared to others, as it is highly connected to other industries. The CTC claims that 60,000 separate industries make up the “tourism industry” . Tourism is a highly unstable industry as it is very seasonal, as it sees its peak during summer months, and is highly susceptible to external influences.(Overview of Tourism Lecture) These external environments have the capacity to create a tourism crisis, and makes tourism susceptible to these external forces (Henderson, 2007). A crisis is “a triggering event causing significant change or having the potential to cause significant change; the perceived inability to cope with this change; and a threat to the existence of the foundation of the organization”. (Henderson, 2007, pg 3.) In the above definition, we can see three significant elements to a crisis. The first is “a triggering event causing significant change or having the potential to cause significant change”. The cause and source of a crisis can help decide the consequences and severity on a scale from major to minor, which is measured by items such as number of people implicated and costs incurred. Spatial and industrial scope is another facet to take into account as the crisis can be local, national, international, corporate, industrial, etc. (Henderson, 2007) The second element is the perceived inability to cope with this change. If a society has the perception that they cannot adapt to changes given to them by an external source, there is a likely chance that they will be unable to adapt quickly enough to avoid the crisis. The last element is “a threat to the existence of the foundation of the organization”. Usually during a crisis, we can see its impact directly through this third point, as most media outlets report on failing organizations and other points related to this.
