The Dark Side of Technology Supanun Lavakittichaiyant 542182 MUIC-PC 29 MAY 2011 The Dark Side of Technology At present, information technology plays such an important role in our life. I.T. helps us with many things, and we sometimes need it to support our life to become better. With these new innovations, our life becomes more convenient. However, people tend to rely on technology regardless of whether there are some bad effects or not. It is essential to be concerned about health deterioration and culture infiltration even though we know that I.T. is helpful. With new innovation, technology has been developing from generation to generation. One of the most obvious developments of technology is communication. We can now see online chatting tends to become popular. People can chat via computers and mobile phones, so cell phones appear to be similar to computers (Dowdall, 2009). In addition, technology also helps the handicapped to live more comfortably with normal people. For example, deaf people are able to hear other people by using digital hearing aids which is one of the technologies developed for long time (2009). However, if the coin has two sides, technology also has advantages and disadvantages that are the other side of the coin. Nowadays, people use technology without thinking about inevitable consequences. For example, machines and robots are used in industrial factories instead of humans (“Robots replace human workers.” 2001, May 7). Although it is helpful, it causes the problem of unemployment (2001, May 7). This can show that being unemployed could be the result of technology consumption. Accordingly, it is important to realize some disadvantages of technology in order to prevent serious consequences or lessen bad effects.
