What are mythologies? Why are they important to us? How do we incorporate our traditions, our ‘stories’ into our daily and mundane lives? These are profound questions which have significant answers. In simple terms, our past determines are present, and helps us build our future. It provides us with a comparative insight of the society then and now, the problems and tribulations faced by our ancestors and those faced by us today. Mythologies present us with a plethora of stories which could be used as a yardstick by today’s generation to base their lives on. They help us conjure strength, determination, virtues from the heroes of our past, thereby motivating us to lead our lives with semblance of resemblance with those of our heroes. Hence we ought to learn from them, it would be foolish to discard them without any thought or credence given to the wisdom provided by them. In fact, studies of mythologies show striking similarities between the problems faced in those eras and the ones faced by countries and societies today. Aren’t greed, lust for power; desire to be successful, over ambition, narrow minded self interest the bane of current day society? A resounding yes would be the answer. So then how are we different today from the times of Bhagavadgita and Confucius? Weren’t these virtues also in plentiful during that day and age also? Evidently yes. Keeping in mind that not all of the teaching would be relevant to our time, we can study these two epics and find the best approach to become successful today. Study of the Bhagavadgita and Confucian philosophy clearly opens up new avenues of thought. They present myriad views and thought to tackle different problems.
